You have to be careful though...

Just because there may be a Sunni uprising against Al-Qaeda doesn’t mean they become our friends. After they kick Al-Qaeda out of our region they’ll do whatever it takes to kick us out including killing our soldiers there.

The Sunnis are Islamist idiots.

The Sunnis want us in Iraq to protect them from Iraq.

Asc2006, I think you mean protect them from Iran.

This is the reason why the Sunnis in Iraq eventually will remain aligned with us. They are scared to death by Iran and the Shia majority. They maybe don’t have genuine love or sympathy for us. But as long as there is the Iranian threat, they will need us and we will need them.

We must keep in mind, the Sunni tribes in al Anbar have signed onto the deal. They will no longer appose American forces in the future, and will participate in the democratic process of voting in the future.
If the other Sunni tribes throughout Iraq take a similiar stance, in hopes of getting in on future oil revenues, then the whole nature of Iraq for the better will have been obtained. In short the original plan in essence.
