It would be even better if the Shia would turn on the al Mahdi army. But the eradication of al Qaeda in Iraq will deal a blow to them that will resound with serious implications throughout the Moslem world. That’s why al Qaeda fights so hard, and it’s why the Democrats don’t want Bush to succeed. Success for the Iraqis would be failure for the Democrats.

When Iraq is cleaned of Al-Qaeda, the Mahdi Army will lose a lot of influence. The only real reason they exist is as a “protector of the Shias” against Al-Qaeda. They need Al-Qaeda to justify their usefulness to the Shia population.
