Evan O’Dorney always eats fish before his spelling bees. The brain food apparently has served him well: He’s the 2007 Scripps National Spelling Bee champion.

I felt sorry for the runner-up, the Canadian kid. Seemed like a very likeable boy. However, I’m glad our American home-schooler won.

"This kid’s attitude kind of perturbed me. If he hated the idea of doing something as *dumb* and distasteful as memorizing spelling words, why’d he get involved? Just so he could put down all the other kids who “didn’t” win?"

You are getting sort of close to the 'self esteem' argument for eliminating grades (and failing courses) in public schools.

I liked the kid's attitude, if nothing else, he's honest.

He has other interests and seems to be doing pretty well with them (performing the symphony he wrote based on his association of numbers with musical notes -!/?). He has mastered a skill that I lack in huge quantities. He won the contest.

If it isn't his favorite subject just imagine what he might do in an area he finds challenging!

PS: If I remember correctly, during the broadcast they mentioned ‘California’ several times and ‘home schooled’ once near the end (I tuned in late). That mention was also when they admitted that the last three winners were not products of mass indoctrination.

Thank You.

She is...!!!

She was 13 when Pearl Harbor was bombed.

FIVE of her brothers were in WWII simultaneously.

She and one her older sisters played in an all-girl orchestra for the troop trains and USO shows as well as when the ships began bringing the more seriously injured troops home.

The guys coming down the gangways were a bit unresponsive, due various injuries and drugs.

They asked their bandleader what they should do.

She said, “they haven’t seen pretty girls in a long time...just smile and play your hearts out”....which they did.

My Mom cried the whole next day.

No we don't have "different observations". I have an informed knowledge and you merely had a knee-jerk reaction to one single story and didn't bother to do any research to confirm your curiosity. You just went off your nut with no proof!

So, to so easily show how ridiculous you are being, here is just a VERY few instances of some findings where the home-schooling aspect was brought out RIGHT upfront that took mere moments to conduct...

AP report in the San Diego Union Tribune "The home-schooled eighth-grader easily aced 'serrefine'”

AP report on CNN.com "The home-schooled eighth-grader easily aced 'serrefine'"

This one from the San Jose Mercury News"As Evan hoisted his trophy, his mother Jennifer and father Michael beamed from the audience. Jennifer, who is his homeschool teacher and devoted herself to helping him prepare, blinked back tears."

Heres an AP report from Time Magazine"Evan, a home-schooled eighth-grader from Danville, Calif., breezed through the competition Thursday night to become the nation's top speller."

Here is the same AP report on ABC News "Evan, a home-schooled eighth-grader from Danville, Calif., breezed through the competition Thursday night to become the nation's top speller."

And now something from that old rag I like to call the San Francisco Chronicle"The homeschooled spelling phenomenon received a golden loving cup trophy and $20,000 -- money the young college-bound scholar says 'I'll probably give to my parents.'"

These were just the FIRST few that showed up on my Google search.

Now, I like to gig the MSM as much as anyone and it is beyond doubt that the MSM is as left as any average Marxist. But when we Conservatives attack them with NO truth behind us, we diminish the reality of their leftism and make OURSELVES look like the idiots. So, its best to do it when you have BOTHERED TO DO THE RESEARCH!

OK. Now that I have made you look the fool. I have to go now.

Bye, bye.

“Our homeschool association has a 6-man football team! Last year, we were one of three in the State of Texas.”

Three teams? Must make for a short season. Either that or every third week is a bye.

That he is homeschooled is mentioned in nearly every radio news on the hour.

Maybe they should start one.

Someone did.

We had 12 games, I think (having all daughters, the football teams isn’t my highest priority, but it does make the calendar!) We play TAPPS (Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools) teams and public schools with 6-man teams for a full season.

Yes, I did: it was detailed in my post. To say I didn't "do any research" is hyperbolic. In fact, I described what I had done to find out what news articles described Evan as being a homeschool student. :)

That AP report was filed at 12:14 am on June 1. My post, whilst posted on June 1, was from a story filed by the AP on 31 May. So, while the AP might have mentioned it in later stories, it wasn't on the general release posted by PMSNBC.

AP report on CNN.com "The home-schooled eighth-grader easily aced 'serrefine'"

This one seems curious; the web site says this was posted at 1737 GMT...isn't that at about 1:37 PM Eastern time?? Such a post hardly proves your point, since it was apparently posted well after the original reporting. Are you certain this article mentioned the homeschooling contemporaneous with your 4:50 am post?

This one from the San Jose Mercury News"As Evan hoisted his trophy, his mother Jennifer and father Michael beamed from the audience. Jennifer, who is his homeschool teacher and devoted herself to helping him prepare, blinked back tears."

EVIDENCE YOU DIDN'T READ MY POST!

Otherwise, why would you give this as a source?? That was the one I cited in the thread.

Did you happen to notice WHEN the story was posted? I did:

Article Launched: 05/31/2007 08:44:22 PM PDT

Ah...before 01 JUNE and therefore at about the same time the PMSNBC/AP wire was posted. Thus my contrast between the two in my post.

Talk about a knee-jerk reaction.

Your "TIME" and "ABC" and "SF Chronicle" posts also were from O1 JUNE, not from 31 May. The posts I found were from the initial reporting on the event--and the AP wire found then neglected to mention he was homeschooled.

These were just the FIRST few that showed up on my Google search.

You probably did a search a bit later than I did: your first missive to me was a full hour after my initial read. Like I said in my post (which again it seems you didn't read), I also did a Google search. Do you think there might have been a flurry of posting afterwards by the press to include the homeschool detail? Maybe. One thing is certain: my Google search did not show any but the aformentioned one....we diminish the reality of their leftism and make OURSELVES look like the idiots. So, its best to do it when you have BOTHERED TO DO THE RESEARCH!

Right. So maybe we ought to check the times of the posting of respective stories before accusing someone of not doing research. Or give him/her the courtesy of completely reading what they've said. :)

Have a good weekend, my friend; I'm sure you mean well, and I certainly agree with the motive behind your post!!
