Romney: Clinton a European Caricature

Sioux City, Iowa (AP) -- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Thursday criticized Democratic rival Hillary Rodham Clinton as a European caricature who would turn the United States into a welfare state.

Speaking to about 200 people in Sioux City, Romney said he wanted to highlight the differences between himself and Clinton, the front-runner for her party's presidential nomination.

"Her view is the old, classic, European caricature that we describe of big government, big taxation, welfare state," said the former Massachusetts governor.

"She gave a speech a couple of days ago and laid out her vision for America. And as I listened to her I figured her platform wouldn't even get her elected in France," Romney, who was a missionary in France, said to chuckles and applause.

In recent French elections, conservative Nicolas Sarkozy captured the presidency, defeating Segolene Royal in her bid to become France's first female president.

Romney criticized Clinton's effort as first lady to enact universal health care and touted his success in passing a plan in Massachusetts. Although Romney won bipartisan praise for his state effort, he hasn't mentioned it much in his bid for president.

"The first difference is mine got passed and hers didn't," he said.

Romney said the election of Clinton as president would force the country to veer off course economically, militarily and socially.

"I'm convinced if Hillary were president ... that we would see instead of a stronger military and a stronger economy and stronger families, we'd see a weaker military because she would ... be able to spend money on the social programs that she favors," he said. "We'd see a weaker economy because she'd raise taxes and we'd have less money going into the private sector and creating new jobs. We'd see weaker families as well."

He’s being far too kind. He must have been softened up by living in MA.

Rommey is getting his "land legs" now that he is doing better in the polls. He feels good enough to go after the Democrats. If Hitlery bits, it will give him front runner status with the drive-by's.

Hah! I love it. Look for Hillary to be totally silent. She knows she would crack.

We already “are” a welfare state. HRC does not have to bring more welfare: merely her election will so ease the fears of her ardent backers that they will assume that she has brought more welfare even if she hasn’t. People don’t know about those things. Most don’t even know the name of their U.S. rep.

Mitt is saying all the right things these days. Here’s hoping politicking in Taxachusettes didn’t permanently cripple his ability to be principled.

He’s being kind because he’s a nice guy with too much class. Even though I prefer Duncan Hunter because I think an ex-army ranger and paratrooper is mean enough and best equiped to win the war against the Islamofacists, Romney’s ability to pick good people like Hunter would make me give him strong consideration.

Mitt is right, Hillary is a European caricature....of Lenin-era Soviet communists.

Way to go, Mitt! Bullseye!

He is a gentleman ... not a wimp, just a gentleman. But that doesn’t mean he will take crap off of a leftist Rodham-rodent.

The best thing about all these politicians is that they are so predictable in their campaign-speak. Here's the response you can expect from Hillary:

Once again, a far right Republican candidate is engaging in divisive rhetoric, stereotypes and name-calling instead of offering solutions to help the middle class Americans who are harmed by their extremist "on your own" policies. Hillary Clinton has the leadership experience and thick, sturdy cankles to be a President for all Americans, not just the rich.

Ok probably not the cankles part.

Right on. I know I am preaching to the choir but we cannot allow this evil Marxist to gain any more power. God forgive me but I detest her to the max.

Cankles would cackle at him in a debate. She has no substance but slander.

I can’t wait to see Mitt against the Beast in a debate. The “smartest woman in the world” would lose it for sure. She’s always totally scripted and boring. Mitt is great on his feet and oh, so smart. The only candidates she’s debated are Lazio and Spencer and she still didn’t do well. The MSM covers for her but she’s a poor public speaker.

Nice. Romney apparently knows who his real opponents are. I’m glad to see one of the candidates is taking the fight to where it belongs. I wish Hunter could break out of the lower tier. There is still time and he might. I think the two of them on message would really get things cooking and energize the base. Either of them could wipe the floor with Obama/Hillary. I don’t know Thompson that well. We’ll have to see what he brings to the table. For now, way to go Mitt. Nice to see it.
