Witch burnings, the Inquisition, the Crusades, and the Genocide against Native Americans were every bit as extreme as those perpetrated by Islam.

Here's where the difference lies between Christianity and islam:
The atrocities you mention were committed in direct opposition to Jesus' teachings, therefore the perpetrators were Christians in name only. The muslims' atrocities were in accordance with Mohammed's edict to "fight against and slay the unbelievers wherever you find them."
