Comprehensive Crack-Up? By W. James Antle III Published 5/31/2007 12:09:09 AM
When President Bush traveled to Georgia Tuesday to promote the Senate immigration bill, he didn't sound like he was happy with the way the debate was going. "If you want to scare the American people, what you say is the bill's an amnesty bill," he complained. "That's empty political rhetoric trying to scare our citizens."
And that's not the rhetoric of a politician who feels like he is currently winning a policy battle. This debate wasn't supposed to get so heated. When a bipartisan group of senators announced the immigration deal two weeks ago, Democrats and Republicans alike were predicting swift passage, perhaps before Memorial Day weekend. What gives?
We've been down this road before. When the Democrats took control of Congress, it was widely assumed that President Bush would finally get the path to citizenship for illegal immigrants that his own party had denied him. But when Congress convened this year, there were reports that key Republican senators -- including a couple of presidential candidates -- were backtracking on an immigration partnership with Ted Kennedy.
Then Congressmen Jeff Flake and Luis Gutierrez introduced their bipartisan bill to a flurry of favorable editorials. Yet instead of blossoming into the fruitful immigration compromise Washington editorialists hoped for, the legislation quietly withered. Whenever a bipartisan consensus on this deeply controversial issue seems close at hand, fissures appear and ultimately nothing much happens.

Because they consider themselves “leaders”, they expect the “rank & file” to lay down arms and fall in line without question.
It just won’t happen when the “rank & file” can’t trust them.
Can't handle the truth?
Can’t handle negative spin.
Dick would take care of things in a right way!
That pretty well sums it up.
Thanks!
Let's not mention Harriot Myers........
I agree he has some accomplishments....but Republican power has been squandered...and I place that directly in his lap.
Well, Bush doesn’t shrink from challenges. Look for him to attack Social Security reform again, soon. Only lame ducks dare touch very controversial issues.
In light of the current political conditions in Washington and their refusal to represent America, their refusal to secure America, their refusal to put America's interests FOREMOST - if THAT'S what it takes, I'd consider that an honor and privilege.
LOL
Actually YOU have been found guilty by this jury of one cbkaty, of the absolutely disgusting liberal trait of positive spin..... Everything I said is the absolute truth.
But, it is not the whole truth, so help you God.
SS reform, may be a challenge, he sure botched up the sale of it the first time around with a GOP House and Senate. If he tries it will go nowhere.
On other issues like immigration, he is a huge disappointment.
It would be nice if Bush wanted to challenge people, if he would try it on liberals and Democrats, or perhaps he could try it on the Mexican Government.
He sure seems tough at dissing the GOP base.
Yes we the base are sexist, racist etc.
I don’t know what happened to this guy but I’ve had enough.
There are many people who wake up every day looking for someone or something to be pissed at. Bush makes their day. Must be the angel in the whirlwind guiding him to aid them in their perpetual pissedness.
I amend my previous post with the addition of, his scolding of anyone that opposes his and Ted Kennedy's AMNESTY bill.
How dare he lecture conservatives....especially those of us that live in border states. He is selling a bogus product....by not telling the American people the whole truth so help me God....
Like the Wizard of Oz..."Pay no attention to that man behind the curtin!"
That may be very true. I only get pissed when there is a need too.
I don't make a habit of sticking my head in the sand and believing everything most politicians say.
Other than that, I am hardly ever pissed and have a decent life at the moment.
LOL! He's certainly been a frequent contributor.
Shall we say, "We're blessed with BiBF, Bush induced Bladder Frequency"?
Don't worry...be happy.............
Let us not face the truth today....as long as we can bury our heads....
Why care if our country is invaded...
Don't worry be happy.
If the truth angers, then so be it.
Hey get a grip and enjoy the ride. This is a process, and, in fact, it is speeded up, as this has never been fought out in a general election. Many people of intelligence and wit are engaged. A list of a few things you don’t like about Bush hardly makes you a player.
