Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, one of the leading Republican candidates, said today that potential GOP rival Fred Thompson is "a fine man."
The former U.S. senator from Tennessee is preparing to launch an exploratory campaign in July, according to media reports.
"All I can say is, 'Come on in, the water's fine,' " Romney said in a Des Moines interview.

I love that - Good for you Mitt.
What a great attitude - only in America.
A class act. Good luck and God bless.
Imagine Putin saying “yes I welcome political challengers”
What a country - I really love the USA
That, my friends, is what they call “class”, something all too often missing from politics. Good for Romney. May the best man win.
More conservatives is only a good thing.
I think I remember reading that they met a couple of months ago. Now I’m wondering if they made an arrangement back then for Prez and VP.
I wouldn’t want to guess which-for-which, either way would be wonderful.
Thompson is timidly and half-heartedly coming in late to the race. That's cause for concern.
We need someone who can and will battle and triumph over a stubborn and vile Pelosi-Reid led Congress long into the late innings. If I had to choose a team captain between Romney and Thompson based on what I've seen to this point, it's no contest: Romney has twice the vigor and focus as Thompson.
Thompson might yet dispel those concerns, but he doesn't have any time to lose getting it done.
It is interesting on another thread you attack Fred Thompson
(who I dont support) claiming that he has lymphoma and that
“Thompson’s health is suspect [JCEccles]”.
You are Romney Shill who attacks people who point out
RomneySocialized Medicine (ROMNEYCARE=HillaryCARE)
or who point out his ineffective term as governor
or that he failed to uphold the law re: illegal aliens
or the BIG DIG.

Just because you can’t grasp Thompson’s tactics doesn’t mean he is “timid”. That is just a stupid snipe.
Romney is the latter day personification of Hamilton's Federalist No. 70 Energy in the Executive .
Energy in the Executive is a leading character in the definition of good government. It is essential to the protection of the community against foreign attacks; it is not less essential to the steady administration of the laws; to the protection of property against those irregular and high-handed combinations which sometimes interrupt the ordinary course of justice; to the security of liberty against the enterprises and assaults of ambition, of faction, and of anarchy...
There can be no need, however, to multiply arguments or examples on this head. A feeble Executive implies a feeble execution of the government. A feeble execution is but another phrase for a bad execution; and a government ill executed, whatever it may be in theory, must be, in practice, a bad government.
The “Big Dig” was an all-night keg party.
Romney showed up at 6 AM. He is not responsible for any house damage.
I’m going to be the cynical one here this time. What else could he say???? “Stay out Fred you just destroyed any chance I had of winning the primary” or “Welcome Fred...I’m wetting my pants because I’m so excited to see you enter, not that I just saw my chances go down the drain.”
I don’t know squat about him except he is from an extremely liberal state and that he is a mormon(which is a cult-—Joseph Smith was the L. Ron Hubbard of the 19th Century). I have “heard” he has waffled (but who hasn’t - probably even Fred). He is not electable and it is my “guess” any “class” exhibited is a show.
So please fellow freepers - enough sacarin for the time being.
I’ve been really impressed by how gracious Romney’s been during this primary:
He criticized McCain’s policy stance on the immigration bill, and as a result, McCain personally attacked him. What did Romney do? He refused to respond in-kind and instead laughed it off and still continues to refer to McCain as an American hero for his service in Vietnam.
He’s been subject to some pretty inappropriate jabs at his religious beliefs (e.g. hecklers, stupid questions from Mike Wallace, Al Sharpton’s snafu, etc.) and still remains completely calm and keeps a good sense of humor.
He has been nothing but complementary of Fred Thompson—even though he will likely prove to be his biggest challenge for the nomination.
Yep, the more I see—the more I like. No one can be Ronald Reagan, but out of all of the candidates, Romney most exemplifies his demeanor, IMO
I would like to see a Fred/Mitt ticket. Think it would be a winner.
