New Orleans Redevelopment Authority In Disarray
Wed May 30, 12:40 PM ET
As New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin prepares to deliver his first State of the City address since Hurricane Katrina, an agency key to implementing the city's $1.1 billion recovery plan is in disarray.
The New Orleans Redevelopment Authority, facing a tight budget and needing money from the city, has put a hold on hiring new staff.
Its power to seize and sell properties faces legal uncertainties arising from new state constitutional limits on property seizures. And, nearly halfway through 2007, the agency still has no contract with the city for work this year.
Board members have vented at NORA's every-other-week board meetings that they're getting no real work accomplished.
NORA wants -- in writing -- specific expectations for its performance along with a $1.2 million commitment from the city to hire staff. The city's recovery director, Ed Blakely, said he expected the group to submit its own proposal for work and funding.
Blakely also said his expectations of NORA -- to move bundles of blighted, abandoned or seized property to market as part of a rebuilding plan -- were outlined months ago.

Keep in mind, that adjusted for inflation, we spent more on Katrina than we did to rebuild Europe under the Marshall Plan.
At least we can get wine and cheese from Europe. From NOLA it's whine and whine.

As bad as it sounds, I can't wait for the next crisis, so that the Katrina victims will shut up and move on. You never here the good things that are going on NOLA or the whole Gulf area. Our church has been sending work teams weekly ever since the hurricane hit. I know that lots of others are doing the same.

Sounds like there must be a lot of the Taxpayers’ greenery sitting in a hadnful of NOLA freezers. All that money sent down there and nothing done. What else is new about RAT LA politicians.

Just one more reason NOT to turn on the television tonight. Nothing he has to say is even remotely intelligent enough to waste time listening to him.

NOLA is unsure what it needs to do but is sure that it needs a $1.2 million staff to do it.

At some point in his address I am sure he will not fail to mention the “victims” who are still so traumatized that they will be sitting on thier asses FOREVER collecting checks.
