US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has cautioned against a growing sentiment in Israel to pursue peace with Syria instead of with warring Palestinian factions, saying there is "no substitute" for creating a Palestinian state, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.
Meanwhile, according to the report, Prime Minister Olmert has frustrated US officials by seeming to be increasingly indecisive.
Rice will discuss the stalled peace process with diplomats in Washington on Wednesday, but with violence erupting between Palestinian factions - and with Israel under constant attack from rockets launched from the Gaza Strip - Rice has faced criticism from some outside experts for spending so much time on a diplomatic long shot, rather than seeking to quickly end the violence.
Israeli officials, who have confirmed Israeli news media reports that there is intense discussion about whether to pursue a peace agreement with Syria, are doubtful that Rice's efforts will amount to much and are concerned that putting the Palestinian track on hold will increase anger and resentment in the Palestinian areas.
The Palestinian issue "is at the core of a lot of problems in the region," Rice told the Post. She said, "There is no substitute for trying to get to the place where the Palestinians finally have their state and the Israelis finally have a neighbor who can live in peace and security with them."
The "Israeli-Palestinian track is extremely important" because it "unlocks the key" to "further engagement between the Arabs and the Israelis," Rice said.

She needn't worry as there isn't a snowball's chance in Arabia that either group would make peace in a way assuring Israel's existence.
This comment is good evidence that there really are parallel universes to ours.

i agree with you Golan is forever Israel. But Israel will have to make its own arrangements and deal with Syria by diplomacy or force or a combination.

the forced nature of this policy is incredibly naive on Bush’s part. Like saying, i am going to stop drinking for ever right after happy hour.

of course, the arabs could leave in large numbers from inside Israel. but driving your point is that there is little incentive for the barbarians to ever come to terms. particular regimes may come to terms but the conflict is merely on standby.

israel must take and hold enough of Gaza to prevent “Israel” from being hit. this is the only solution.

If they give the Golan Heights back[,] Northern Israel...will make Sderot look like a vacation paradise.Anyone who has been there and has half a brain can see the essential strategic value of the Golan Heights in maintaining Israel's security against Syria. Israel would be suicidal to give it back.

Commencement Address at Boston College (Secretary Condoleezza Rice, Boston, Massachusetts, May 22, 2006.
US Department of State)
Excerpts:
As a student of a Catholic high school, the Sisters of Loretta taught me, I am pleased to be at an institution of higher education with such strong and celebrated Catholic and Jesuit traditions . . . You see, I got my Master's Degree at Notre Dame. (Boos.) I acquired a passion for the fighting Irish . . . and my family has been college educated and Presbyterian ever since. (Laughter and applause.) . . . I wandered into a course on international politics taught by a Czech refugee who specialized in Soviet studies, a man who had a daughter by the name of Madeleine Albright. With that one class, I was hooked. I discovered that my passion was Russia and all things Russian.

Our USA does not need the balkanization, IMO. Four-fifths of us are in favor of Israel, and special interest groups should let that be. My first lead on the information, BTW, was a flood of special interest (Catholic and Episcopal ethnic/religious advocacy) mail calling for Rice's appointment.
And no, I'm not the one stirring the pot. That was done by the putsch for Rice's appointment and the "Road Map" for Islamo-fascist movements into Israel.

In 1967, the leaders of our various nations showed their vanity with UN Security Council Resolution 242. They again ignored the Mandate (binding world agreement on the Jewish Homeland) and demanded that Israel give land to the Arab nations. We can go back further than that, though. The "road map" is really not a new thing, but our leaders will go on saying that it was Israel's idea all along. The canard of blaming Israel in advance for its own destruction by other nations/religions goes back thousands of years.
