I’ve never heard California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and parts of Wyoming defined as a ‘sliver of land’. These are some the largest states in the country, after Alaska and Texas.

Are you thinking of the Gadsden Purchase? That is a pretty small parcel (relatively).

What I find hilarious is that this land they claim as theirs was only part of the Mexican state from ~1821-1848. A mere 27 years. I have cars older than that.
