Fletcher told her doctor she couldn’t afford to lose weight. In the produce section at Happy Foods, Fletcher pointed to a $1.99 head of cauliflower.

“How can I go on a diet?” she asked. “Tomatoes are $1.49 a pound.”

OK, I call bulls@#t. Fresh produce may be expensive, but why can't this lady just eat less of whatever she's eating now?

The author of this article is taking her subjects' hard-luck stories way too uncritically.

America is a country where the poor are more likely to be fat than the rich. Think about that. In all of human history, how often has that been true?

These articles are such total CRAP!

What about the recent stories where the food stamp people were ADVERTISING for “customers” because they had more food stamps than “clients”??!

There are tons of food programs in this country. Any who goes hungry does so by ignorance or willfil choice.

It’s just standard pre-election year. When Republicans are in office, the homeless/hunger stories start and before the middle of next year, the media will have the country feeling like all americans are homeless and the economy is in the tank...course reality doen’t matter.

A very large can of tomato sauce can be had very cheaply. No it's not farm fresh but IT IS very nutritious.

This article made me laugh. Was it supposed to?

Seriously, it's incredible how poorly written it is.

As Congress prepares to wrangle with reauthorizing the Farm Bill, which funds the food-stamp program, anti-hunger advocates are on high alert. Eager to generate public discussion during national Hunger Awareness Week, June 2-10, they worry about the more than 25 million Americans who use food stamps.

I stopped reading right here...
The article begins by talking about a Mexican woman and her offspring; This woman is a criminal alien who would fare no better in Mexico, or wherever she belongs. She contributes nothing but adding to the lifeboat which will be eventually swamped.
What does that have to do with Americans who use food stamps?

Lisa Gutierrez, you should try writing your fairy tales in Mexico, where they will more easily be ignored.

Why do we still have immigration laws?
Why do we need the INS?

Just wondering...

I guess I’m a hard ass because, I still don’t see justification for spending my tax dollars on this.

My charitable giving should be my choice, not the governments.

I’ll match my charitable giving, as a per-centage of income, against the bleeding heart liberals any time.

Nation’s unseen gluttony: tobacco, cable television, and cellphones.

I saw many a head with a phone attached in the social security line when I worked in a building that shared office space...

Disabled and elderly — understandable.

Why do people have babies they know they can’t support? Because they know that government always will steal from our paychecks to support them.

The socialistas drag out the old hunger chestnut every time they want to tap the taxpayers wallet for more money. It has been working since 1962, usually fuelled by urban legends and downright lies. Having raised the minimum wage they now want to raise food stamp allotments. Too bad they don't bother to actually work with these poverts to repair their blighted lives.

Thirty minutes. Forty minutes. An hour.
On a busy day, it can take that long before the clients can go around the back of the building to get their free bags of groceries — two bags of dry foods, one bag of government commodities and one bag of bread and meat for a family of four, for instance. No one smiles here.

How inconvenient! Some people actually work for more than 8 hours to be able to buy that much food.

For years I ate short grain brown rice with green beans or broccoli, Italian dressing and grated Parmesan cheese every single day. I didn’t weigh very much, but I was healthy as hell.

After the mother left, Lambertson calculated that rent and child care took up nearly all the woman’s salary. Nothing was left for food. Nada.

Anna, do you really believe that she lives alone?
