Iran's proposed permitted limit for aflatoxin levels in pistachios has been approved by the 39th session of Codex Alimentarius Commission's in China.
An official with Iran's Agriculture-Jihad Ministry told IRNA on Tuesday that Codex has agreed to set 15 ppb (parts per billion) as acceptable aflatoxin levels for exported pistachios till March 2009.
Farid Jalali, who is in charge of the ministry's international affairs added, "It is quite probable that Codex will accept the permitted level permanently. "
While the EU was insisting on 4 ppb, Iran managed to convince the committee by putting forth statistics and evidence that 15 ppb is acceptable, he said.
Codex has also assigned Iran to determine the quality standards for pomegranates and yoghurt drink as well as regulations for packaging and transport of fresh fish.
The Codex Alimentarius Commission was created in 1963 by FAO and WHO to develop food standards to protect health of the consumers and ensure fair trade practices.
Oh well, if history dictates quality they can always dye them red.
My question is; what is an agriculture-jihad ministry?
They’re the people who referee food fights.
