Your “poll” numbers were low among your supporters not because of Iraq, but because of your stance on illegal immigrants.

I grant you that President Bush has a good excuse to become 'unhinged' -- given the crap he has to deal with day to day. Nonetheless, I believe he's always wanted to grant amnesty -- its just that his plans got somewhat derailed due to 9-11. It wouldn't have looked too good to declare 'open borders' at that point.
And to be honest, I probably wouldn't have cared all that much if he had granted amnesty in early 2000. I'd have moaned a bit, but gotten over it.
What sticks in my craw now, and what makes this proposed law unpalatable is that he's done nothing to enforce the law over these past 7 years.
Had he built a wall, or moved troops down to the border after 9-11, and had he gone aggressively after illegal immigrants, and had he smacked down the 'Cities of Refuge' (like cut off the Federal funding from places like San Francisco and Berkeley) I'd be OK with this new proposal.
But given that he's done nothing, other than to hold a few dog and pony shows from time to time -- I'm dead set against this proposal.
I'm sure the 'carrot' parts in the provision will stay, but the 'sticks' will be quickly forgotten or ignored.
I agree. And apparently, one of our local grocery stores here in Fenton, MO caught onto this trend about 3 years ago. Out of the blue, they added an entire aisle of Spanish/Mexican food and candles (really). That merchandise sat and collected dust for over a year. Suddenly, it began to sell, no more dust.
Wonder who gave Shop and Save the heads up??
Regarding Bush: I am sick that he could have taken the good will of the majority of the country and then spit in our faces. In 2004, I worked phone banks for him. I also walked neighborhoods, alone, to work for his reelection. I was warned in one heavy union subdivision that I could get hurt. I went on. So much for that....

Clinton, Bush’s “other brother” to paraphrase GHWB, did the exact same thing for the exact same reason.
I'm not a mind reader, but I'm trying to rationalize President Bush's position on immigration. Like I said earlier, I believe President Bush to be a good man. I don't know him, but from what I've seen and heard from him I consider our Country to have been blessed to have him as President.
He's been totally transparent regarding illegal immigration from Day 1 - its not like he's pulling an end run on us.
So I'm left scratching my head as to the 'why?'.
I don't think he falls into the Democrat camp of wanting to import a new large voting block that ensures our drift into socialism.
I also don't think he falls into the country-club republican block that likes the idea of really cheap labor.
Consequently I've conjured up the 'moral' angle as his motivation. You can never generalize, but the Mexicans I've met are hardworking, honest, and family oriented.
The kind of immigrants we want.
I'm guessing that was the President's experience as well, and why he's pushed this blanket amnesty. But where this position loses its moral underpinnings is that it:
1) Encourages people to break the law. Not for any life and death reason. Nor freedom to worship reason. But for the bases of all reasons - money.
2) Its destructive to a nation. One nation cannot absorb a massive, and unregulated influx of immigrants. We do not have the infrastructure in place.
3) Its immoral for someone sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States to ignore this invasion -- 'peaceful' or not. President Bush abdicated his duty on this manner
4)It is unhealthy for the Country. Third-world immigrants who come into the Country without their shots are going to start spreading third-world diseases.
5) It is extremely unfair to those who entered this Country legally. They waited in line, they jumped through the hoops, and they crawled over the hurdles. What do they get for their hard work? This law spits in their eyes.
Like I said, I'm not a mind-reader - I was just trying to rationalize why the President is pushing this noxious law.

With all due respect, Mr. President, that's a load of crap and you know it. And now you know that we know it too, so how about coming back down to earth and start enforcing the immigration laws instead of trying to subvert them. Thank you very much.
