Will Sen. Tom Coburn Jump In?
The Real Clear Politics Blog ^ | May 29, 2007 | BLAKE DVORAK

Maybe, reports the American Spectator. The Oklahoma Republican had been mulling a run earlier this year but apparently backed out due to the crowded field.

"He's not bound to any timetable or any fundraising imperative," says a longtime adviser to Coburn, who has spoken with him. "What's important for him is that there is no other true, Reagan conservative in the race, and he thinks he can fill that void."

If you're name is Fred Thompson, Newt Gingrich or Al Gore, there's both room and time for another candidate to jump in. However, every one of those unannounced candidates has in his own way been running a stealth campaign for several months now. Gore and Thompson have carved out the "savior" niche while Gingrich seems to be waiting for the GOP field to winnow a bit before beginning his conservative "dark horse" run sometime in the fall.

I like him - I do. He's an unconventional candidate and he's the genuine anti-Washington article. The politicians can't stand him because he keeps rocking the boat.

Boy, that's mighty mature of you. Coburn is one of our country's finest legistators, sticking up for true conservatism year after year.

Let me guess - you're a Rudy supporter, right?

I’d be surprised if he was really mulling a run. HE came and spoke at our local American Family Association fundraising dinner last year(?), and he was asked about being President. I was sure he said he didn’t have the training or experience for it, that he was more a ‘citizen legislator’ than an executive leader.

I think he was right. Not everybody who thinks right is cut out to be President. As bad as some people think Bush has done, he had the ability to make decisions and order people around and make sure things got done. That’s a different skill than dreaming up laws and setting budgets and trying to work with fellow legislators to get things done.

I am a Rudy supporter.

And a Fred Thompson supporter.

In the end - I will support whomever the GOP puts forward as our nominee.

Just kidding about Tom Coburn - did not mean to offend.

But honestly - he has no chance in hell of getting to the GOP POTUS nomination - none.

I knew I was right.

Yet another datapoint for the typical modus operandi of a Rudy supporter: trash conservatives, all conservatives, but in such a thoughtless manner as to immediately identifiy yourself as being in the Rudy camp.

That you said “just kidding” after being called on it makes no difference. The above is typically the default behaviour for Rudybots in their natural state.

A man a widely hated (for the right reasons) in DC as Coburn is could not perform effectively as President even if he could win the nomination. I doubt five Republican Senators would give him the time of day.

You really need to settle down.

You know nothing about me - so guard the knee jerk comments.

The above is typically the default behaviour for Rudybots in their natural state.

It's their "CYA" so they won't get banned.

Cincinnatus' Wife used to play the victim card too, trashing conservatives, but when called on it, she immediately went into this "why me?" mode. Fortunately, the Mods saw through this charade.

It sure would be a fun campaign! Wasn’t he the one who said his opponent looked like Saddam?

Yeah. The “bugzapper” thread was ugly, with too much vitriol, and left a lot of bad feelings. But ultimately it was needed.

I think of it as FR’s chemotherapy treatement.

I think it was Jim Bunning who said that his opponent looked like one of Saddam’s sons. Tom Coburn tends to be more level headed though he once claimed that there was “rampant lesbianism” in Oklahoma’s public schools. :)

there seems to be a lot of good talent in OK.

Coburn, Nickles, Watts, Keating, Largent (how he lost to a Dem I do not know).

As a VP choice, Yes. As a Pres. candidate, it’s way too late for 2008.

I don't want to give him up as a Senator just yet.

He will term-limit himself after 2 terms. I say we give Fred 8 years and then Tom can run in 2016.
