You may want to put that soda can down.
A common preservative found in drinks such as Coca-Cola, Sprite, Dr. Pepper, Fanta and Diet Pepsi may cause serious cell damage, according to a report in Britain's The Independent. Sodium benzoate has the ability to switch off vital parts of a person's DNA, according to research from a British university. The problem is usually associated with aging and alcohol abuse, but new findings show that drinking soda with the preservative can eventually lead to of the liver and degenerative diseases such as .

Sodium benzoate, which derives from benzoic acid, has been used for years by the carbonated drinks industry to prevent mold from developing in soft drinks. The ingredient has been the subject of concern on cancer, because when mixed with Vitamin C, it turns into a carcinogenic substance called benzene, the Independent reported. Last year, a Food Standards Agency survey of benzene in drinks found high levels in four brands that were removed from store shelves. "These chemicals have the ability to cause severe damage to DNA in the mitochondria to the point that they totally inactivate it: they knock it out altogether," said Peter Piper, a professor of molecular biology and biotechnology.

Can a “study” teaching us about the dangers of “secondhand” burps be in our future?
Good point. According to the soft drink agency in Europe, they said it is in many fruits. Now, the levels....I don’t know.
What about lemonade? It supposedly has less sugar than soda, but I guzzle two glasses or more a day.
I used to drink a lot of soda, but I have really cut down. Now I drink tons of water.
My problem is I am addicted to Country Time lemonade and have 2-3 8 oz. glasses a day. Still, it supposedly has lots less sugar, so I think I am okay....hopefully.
This is from Wiki:
“The International Programme on Chemical Safety found no adverse effects in humans at doses of 647-825 mg/kg of body weight per day.”
Now, how much is in soda?
I know that diet coke kills mentos.
If it is packaged in a can or bottle, it is produced basically the same as soda. It may have a little less refined sugar because it has a small juice content probably 5 to 10 % juice
If it is the powdered type, you determine the level of sugar you use.
No problem here. I’ve got my coffee. Actually I had my first soda pop in a long time, just a few days ago. We had it in the house for our nieces and nephews, and it was a hot day.
I like to live dangerously once in a while.
From another site:
“Sodium benzoate has been the subject of extensive experimentation: it has been tested in longitudinal and short-term feeding experiements in man, dogs, and rats. In one experiment in Germany, four generations of rats were continuously exposed to 0.05 or 1 percent sodium benzoate in their diet. Scientists did not observe any harmful effects on growth, life span, or internal organs. No tumors were detected. All evidence points to sodium benzoate as a safe preservative, except for rare instances of allergic reaction. “
So, I doubt that these sodas are using more than 1 percent, as that is the legally ok range it appears from the FDA.
powdered
Use powdered Splenda instead of sugar or use pure cane sugar, you need much less to sweeten and it is natural
Of course, if you google Splenda that might scare you also
My drug of choice, Diet Mountian Dew <1 ppb

Most sodas contain Calcium Disodium EDTA which inhibits the formation of benzine.
I am drink vitamin water which contain Sodium Bezoate , but also Calcium Disodium EDTA.
You can get vitamin water at wholefoods free of Sodium Bezoate.
I’m a big time Diet Pepsi drinker, too (Diet Coke has no bite, too sweet). I worry more about the effect all the phophoric acid has on my body’s ability to absorb calcium. Still not all that much, though (he says as he prepares to get his 3rd can of the day from the machine).
“Anybody who drinks that much refined sugar will be a Type II diabetic by the time they are 50”
I figured that out by the time I was 16. Actually, my high school cafeteria only offered diet sodas, and I discovered that diet Hires rootbeer (remember Hires? that was good rootbeer) tasted pretty good. Then I moved on to diet Coke and, finally, Diet Pepsi. The Aspartame or other chemicals may not be good for me, but at least I’m not making my blood sugar levels go all crazy with all that HFCS.
Damn it! I quit drinking Cokes and DP because of the phosphoric acid which, is bad for teeth and bones. (attention women)

Started drinking IPA Rootbeer which of course, has SB.
FYI; the new natural 7-UP has neither.
Ginger Ale. The ONLY pop I drink. :-)
I keep a large supply of nicotine in my body, that way cancer cells can’t grow. Nicotine is great poison of cancer cells.
just one more way the commies are messing with the purity of our bodily fluids!
I drink less than 1 soda a week.
Now coffee, that’s my life blood!
