Mironov Tells Kyoto Experts The World Is Getting Cooler
By Simon Shuster
Staff Writer

Sergei Mironov

ST. PETERSBURG -- It was a failure from the start. Russia's biggest conference on the Kyoto Protocol, which aims to fight global warming, began with a speech from a top official who denied that global warming even exists.

"In reality, the scientific basis for the protocol is fairly weak," Federation Council Speaker Sergei Mironov told a crowded opening session of the two-day conference Thursday, which drew more than 200 environmental experts and carbon market participants from around the world. "In the opinion of many experts, the emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere does not have any effect on the climate."

On this point, Mironov stands on the fringes of global scientific opinion. A growing consensus has formed among top scientists and politicians, who have been warning governments to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases being spewed into the atmosphere. The Kyoto Protocol, first signed in 1997, created a system of financial incentives for doing this.

Hmm.

Sorry, SB, but this all sounds a bit fishy to me. I have become very suspicious and cynical about "trust me" stories. No offense intended, just a sign of the times. [Tom]

No, you played the religion card with...

” the darwin crowd, who believe that all this (the earth, life, mankind) is just a big freakish mistake or random mutation”

Nice try, though, loser.

Yes... well, the Oceans are rising. The oceans have been rising for more than a century. The Reagan administration was already concerned enough about it to set up an agency to study it. The U.S. army says the Oceans are rising.

But its slow. Less than a few inches last century and less than a foot over the next 50 years. Its real but its slow.

Gore etc exaggerate the speed of the rise to cause a rush to judgment about the cause and the solution. Many of these people are same ones who oppose capitalism and industry for any reason and are happy to make the situation worse than it is for political reasons.

But some of us know that democracy and prosperity depend on capitalism and we who value the environment because we want a nice place to live and not because environmentalism is our religion.

We need to keep this sane. We study the situation, see if anything can be done and keep the fanatic from running the show.

But we will never do that by denying the reality that to global surface temperature is slowly rising and that the oceans are slowly rising.

Global population is more likely to be in serious decline than rise. What are your FACTS that say otherwise?

Just to note -- joining the consensus is not a substitute for logic or facts. Anger, frothing, rudeness and idiocy are not arguments.

“loser.” ?

I believe I was designed (as was the whole Universe), and you believe you are a random mutation descended from bonzo the chimp. Sounds like you are the loser. Ever heard of reading? its one of the 3Rs (reading writing & arithmetic), try reading some facts about darwinism (and then get back to me).

Your ignorance is overwhelming, but it’s the pride in it that passes me by. As I said, religion was introduced in this thread by you, not me. Spin that. Loser.

It strikes me that you are not at all familiar with what Darwinsm says or, more importantly in your case, what it doesn't say. May I suggest you apply the "reading" suggestion to yourself. Otherwise, by using old wives tales in your argumentation, you are exposing yourself as a charlatan.

Frankly, I’d rather have global warming than global cooling; but I hope both sides are wrong.

“Come to my house, I can make kids plant trees and take out the recycling and not charge a dime! :-)”

“I wonder if they taught them to do windows?”

Considering how horrible and watered-down some of our education system has become, training in janitorial services may be of more use than the starry-eyed students might imagine.

"Note: don't assume that I necessarily support the opposite if I reject some argument. To do so would be to be small minded and to draw hasty conclusions of my intentions and reasoning."

EnvironMental activists have used that "winning through intimidation" tactic against elected officials for the past 30-40 years with impunity!

There has also been speculation that a warmer climate may benefit Siberia.

Russia did sign on to Kyoto, but only once they figured they would make billions as a payee nation. Their economic destruction had collapsed their emissions.

They likely will walk away from any revision with a new baseline.
