Captain Cobol, indeed. Took some programming courses, including Cobol, but never used them. Except...when a customer had an errant program messing up the operation of the equipment I was responsible for.

The problem was with formatting. The problem was ten years running. The problem couldn’t be fixed because the program was in spaghetti code and without documentation. I asked if possibly the formatting had been done with formatting code (whatever that column 1 stuff is called) and not embedded code.

The problem was then fixed in a few days. Sometimes a little knowledge is not such a dangerous thing.
