Romney Supports Tolerance for Gays, But Not Public Servants Who Speak Against Homosexuality

Romney among those who condemned Gen. Peter Pace, Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff for saying homosexuality immoral

JACKSONVILLE, Florida, May 25, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Officials running for public office should not discuss personal beliefs about morality says Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who also stated that his opposition to same-sex “marriage” should not be construed as intolerance of homosexuals, many of whom he appointed to his administration as Massachusetts governor.

"I oppose discrimination against gay people," Romney told the Associated Press. "I am not anti-gay. I know there are some Republicans, or some people in the country who are looking for someone who is anti-gay and that's not me."

Romney made his comments after he told supporters at a campaign stop that government had no authority to tell pastors what to preach about homosexuality, although he personally would not preach that homosexuality is sinful. Romney said a leader must “respect people who made different choices and have different beliefs in their lives and have differences,” and he feels the same way about homosexuals.

The AP interview did not mention whether Romney specified any “anti-gay” Republicans he knew, but Romney’s appointments of known homosexual activists to political positions of power does concern pro-family advocates. Among these were National Log Cabin Republicans Patrick Guerriero and former Massachusetts Log Cabin president Mark Goshko.

Romney’s Secretary of the Executive Office of Transportation and Construction, Daniel Grabauskas, had previously served as head of the Registrar of Motor Vehicles, where he added a sex-change check-off box to drivers license renewal forms.

Homosexual activist Kevin Cranston also directed Romney’s HIV/AIDS Bureau in the Department of Public Health. Cranston was a co-founder of Boston Alliance for Gay and Lesbian Youth (BAGLY) and fought the CDC's recommendation to track HIV-infected patients by name rather than anonymous ID numbers.

Romney also appointed Stephen Abany, a homosexual member of the Massachusetts Lesbian and Gay Bar Association (MLGBA), as a district judge. Abany had stated his opposition to any “anti-gay legislation” including attempts to overturn Goodridge v. Dept. of Public Health, which led to the legalization of same-sex “marriage” in Massachusetts.

Romney also told the AP that he thought it inappropriate for people in public office to express their convictions on homosexuality.

"I don't think that a person who's running for a secular position as I am should talk about or engage in discussions of what they in their personal faith or their personal beliefs is immoral or not immoral," Romney told the AP.

Romney was among a chorus of political voices who condemned Gen. Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, for expressing his belief back in March that homosexual behavior, like adultery, was immoral and the military had no interest in supporting either.

"I think people are entitled to believe what they want to believe, but what they say in their official and secular roles should be an expression of tolerance and respect for people regardless of our differences,” Romney then said.

Romney has been under intense scrutiny for his previous support of the homosexual agenda, which his administration continued to aggressively fund and support even as Romney was courting social conservatives for his presidential run.

He wants to say what it takes to be elected if that means saying something that ~(sounds)~ semi-conservative (or what passes as so in the secular media) then he will do that to get elected, but I do not believe Mr. Mitt Romney is consistent in his positions, he is taking the typical (POST-MODERN) view that HE can hold BOTH positions (pro-Christian aka against Gay marriage, and yet not really against sin (even Mormonism is AGAINST homosexuality, last I remeber), he wants to get along with the media/secualar society by cow-towing to their “tolerance” toward sin (not just tolerance toward individuals).

I can’t stand his brand (of politician). At least I respect Rudy Guiliani for being HONEST about his beliefs, I may not vote for him, but I respect the man, as MAYOR of AMERICA, and for being honest about his beliefs, but I still won’t vote for he, either..

Well it certainly makes clear what we have been trying to tell people who support him.

“who also stated that his opposition to same-sex “marriage” should not be construed as intolerance of homosexuals, many of whom he appointed to his administration as Massachusetts governor. “

Note further down in the article it specifically says he appointed “homosexual activists” to powerful position.

No he didn't. The keyword there is preach.

Why is it that with any Romney remark, sooner or later someone has to interpret it beyond its obvious meaning?

Romney clearly said he will not publicly condemn homosexuality as a sin, even personally. Using the word "preach" is even worse, as it indicates that he would not even condemn it in church.

It's more evidence that Romney cannot be counted on for moral leadership in the presidency. He has no spine.

He can't even get through one interview without contradicting himself

And his fallback position is liberal. Maybe he misplaced his carefully-crafted notes on how to speak conservative.

I hate to burst your bubble but the views you expressed on post #61 are the exact same that Mitt Romney has been expressing for years. I wont be surprised if you come around to support him later on after you figure out that the MSM has been feeding you lies about his record. He never pushed for any homosexual agenda. That will soon become clear as people sort through the facts.

The General said that his comments about gays were out of line. So Romney agreed with the General. So what?

Thumbs down on Romney as far as I’m concerned.

Romney said a leader must “respect people who made different choices and have different beliefs in their lives and have differences,” and he feels the same way about homosexuals.

Oh yes, we must respect men who have sex with men in bath houses and bug chasers and men who have orgies in the bushes in parks and seduce young teenagers etcetcetc. And not just men... I suppose we have to respect sex-changers, transsexuals, transvestites and those who promote and teach such sickness to our children.

I have a few words for Romney and they are not nice words.

All law is based on morality.

It is immoral to:

Lie
Cheat
Steal
Rob
Assault
Murder
Rape
Kidnap
etcetcetc

What liber(al)tarians really mean is this:

We want to be able to take drugs and party hearty and have any kind of sex, porn etc be legal, free, open and fine and dandy without any of that nasty judgementalism that makes us feel weird.

“Romney Supports Tolerance for Gays, But Not Public Servants Who Speak Against Homosexuality”

Entirely nothing wrong with this headline.

Romney is not trying to become the Bishop, he’s trying to become President. That is, a representative for all Americans.

I, personally, wouldn’t vote for Romney unless he ends up beong the last man standing. But, this is not the reason. I just think Fred or Duncan would be better.

That said. Anyone in authority would have to endorse tolerance of just about anyone but criminals, the worst kinds of circus freaks and naturally, terrorists. That’s just commons sense!

Insofar as a Public servant is either elected by, or employed by the public, they have no right at all to make derogatory official statements against any group of Americans, just as I would be wrong to create that kind of work environment for our employees. They are paid by some of those very same people to simply do thier jobs.

Homosexuality, whether one tolerates it or not, is not illegal, except under sodomy laws which would preclude many of us from the occasional woo hoo! I do think there is a thin line between endorsing the homosexual agenda, and defending our citizens. But, thin as it might be, its pretty visable to most with common sense.

I don’t see Romney as endorsing the homosexual agenda here. I see him, rightfully, attempting to represent all Americans equally.

Homosexual "Rights"

Gov. Romney has a long history of promoting and furthering the homosexual agenda, and working closely with leading gay activists

Romney twice sought and received the endorsement of the homosexual Log Cabin Republican Club

Romney's campaign distributed pro-gay rights campaign literature during Boston's "Gay Pride" events

Romney supports homosexual "anti-discrimination" laws

Such laws are usually carried out at the expense of freedom of religion and speech. For example, they would allow lawsuits against a Christian book store owner for refusing to hire a homosexual activist applicant.

Romney advocates homosexual couples' adoption rights be recognized by the government

Romney supports homosexual domestic partnerships

Romney supported and promoted legalizing homosexual civil unions

Romney Opposes the Boy Scouts' Ban on Homosexual Scoutmasters

Romney barred Boy Scouts from public participation in 2002 Olympics

Homosexual activism in government

Romney appointed prominent homosexuals to key positions in his administration

Romney appointed prominent homosexual activists and Democrats as judges

Romney Rewards one of the State's Leading Anti-Marriage Attorneys by Making him a Judge

Romney announces he won't fill judicial vacancies before term ends

Romney's Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth used huge taxpayer funding to promote homosexuality in the public schools

Romney's Commission organized public gay "Youth Pride Day" parades and "transgender proms" which promote unhealthy and risky behavior

Romney issues a proclamation celebrating gay "Youth Pride Day"

Romney's Department of Education promotes the homosexual agenda

Romney's Department of Public Health (DPH) cooperates with the homosexual activist movement

Romney opposed federal legislation that would stop public schools from promoting homosexuality

Romney's Dept. of Social Services honors homosexual "married" couple as adoptive "Parents of the Year"

Homosexual "Marriage"

Romney refused to endorse the original 2002 Mass. constitutional amendment absolutely defining marriage as one man and one women

Romney unnecessarily (and unconstitutionally) implemented homosexual marriages in Massachusetts

Romney had marriage licenses changed to allow same-sex marriages

Romney administration ordered Justices of Peace to perform homosexual "marriages" when asked - or be fired!

Romney administration's training of Town Clerks (on how to issue same-sex marriage licenses) states that marriage statutes were not changed

Romney signs bill eliminating Sexual Transmitted Disease (STD) testing requirement for marriage

When requested of him, Romney personally issues special one-day certificates to allow otherwise unqualified people to perform homosexual "marriages"

Was Romney's public opposition to homosexual "marriage" based on expediency, not principle?

The Mitt Romney Deception

Pretty convincing collection.

I do think Romney leans hard towards gay activists and I have no intention of helping him get the nomination, but I still don’t think there’s anthing wrong with what he said in regards to this thread.

A public servant should not be making derogatory statements about any group of Americans, and a Leader of this country must be tolerant of homosexual people. We’re not Iran.(It doesn’t say they have to like it) Even George Bush is tolerant of them, he just wants gay marriage banned because the vast majority of America wants that too.

This is just one more example of twisted doublespeak from the master of it. Such pronouncements just muddy the waters and confuse people. Of course, that’s what it is intended to do.

I'd like to see just one viable Republican candidate put homosexuals back into the sexual deviant category where they belong.

If you think this is a job for elected officials, you are out of your mind.
