WASHINGTON: Having won his fight with congressional Democrats on an Iraq war spending bill, President George W. Bush is now waging an equally aggressive battle with Republican senators as he tries to persuade them to support an immigration bill that he hopes will be a signature domestic achievement.
As the Senate debated the immigration measure, Bush spent the past week lobbying behind the scenes to build support for it. A dozen Republican senators, including some of the staunchest opponents of the bill, were summoned to Oval Office meetings to hear the president deliver an impassioned appeal for the legislation.
In return, participants said, they gave Bush an earful about complaints from their constituents.
"He may have this legacy thing in mind - he may think that it's Nixon going to China, that only he can get this done," said Senator Jeff Sessions, Republican of Alabama. Describing the meeting as positive, Sessions said Bush "took it well" when he told the president pointedly that he did not intend to vote for the measure.
"I think he's made a big mistake," Sessions added. "I think he put himself in a position of weakness by making this something that he desperately wants."

Not surprised that you are from Texas.
The truth is that if YOU had done a little research you wouldn't have made such in un-informed statement.
This is also about throwing a bone to the high powered Hispanics in Texas that helped put him in both the Governor’s mansion and the White House.
And most of the SOB’s will cave to his demands and say to Hell with our Constituents.
Can someone give me an honest and accurate reason for why Bush is pushing this amnesty bill so hard. It just seems so inconceivable to me that he would do this knowing his republican base doesn’t want it and will severely hurt the GOP at the ballot box next year?????
I totally dislike GWB at this point, I have had it with him and wish I had never voted for him. ANd if the republican party passes this POS I will levave the party.

Because honestly Bush doesn’t care what the people want... Sadly, up til now we’ve praised him for it, saying that the War on Terror required leadership and not poll-watching. We’ve done nothing but encourage this attitude from him ever since Sept 11... Hindsight is 20/20, but I don’t know what we could possibly do to stop it now :(
Jeb Bush’s wife is a native of Mexico.
Her first name is Colomba.
She is not Colombian.
the repubs supporting this are probably swayed by businesses wanting the keep wages down and be guaranteed a source of cheap labor.
That should be a no-brainer.
Not to mention, 80-100 years ago we did not have the massive social welfare state that these illegals will be taking advantage of. The Catholic immigrants of the past even set up their own parochial schools for their children thus not being a burden on the taxpayer.
What is really frightening (if this bill passes) is the future of congressional legislation in this country.
Politicians will now feel confident that they enact any legislation, irrespective to their constituent, that they feel we need.
Want same sex marriage? Wanna clamp down on the internet? How about shutting up those pesky talk radio people. You say the American people won’t allow this? Hey! 80% don’t want this bill, but, they know what’s best for us.
Well, I don’t have a crystal ball that can tell me the future with certainty, so I just rely on simple economics. So long as there is an unending supply of low-skilled labor, then it will put downward pressure on wages.
Bingo! Brother George is assuring the 60 - 100 million Hispanic/Mexican voting block for bro Jeb when he's ready to run in 8 years.
Gosh. What we could have accomplished if GW Bush had been willing to expend this much political capital on behalf of conservatism for two terms...
It’s not often we’re proud of politicians in Alabama. I’ve been extremely proud of Jeff Sessions this past year...on judges, the war, and now his steel backbone in dealing with the President on Amnesty.
Check your facts. She is Mexican. Her NAME is “Columbo.”
Read Post 96 for WHY that is important (to the Bush clan, at least).
