“It’s gettin’ to be re-goddamn-diculous.”
John Wayne

Here’ where the Duke becomes a Rock n’ Roll trivia question:

Question: What John Wayne line became the title of a number one hit?

Answer: “That’ll be the day!” [from “The SEARCHERS” - which also gave its name to one of Britain’s greatest bands (’Needles and Pins’, ‘Love Potion #9, etc)].

Tom Mix attended Audie Murphy’s funeral and bawled like a baby in absolute respect to Murphy.

What If John Wayne Was Alive Today?

To paraphrase the movie “Hannah & Her Sisters”: he’d never stop throwing up.

Don’t you recall John Wayne calling some in his films “Pilgrim”?

Only one: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. But impressionists picked it up and it came to seem he said it in every movie!

Been enjoying the AMC channel Duke Centennial special this weekend.

Today has been especially good.

Two Maureen O'Hara's bracketed by North to Alaska with the spectacularly beautiful, deliciously sophisticated Capucine (all too tragic too).

I'll take Maureen. The Quiet Man's up next.

I'll take Maureen, porcelain dolls are nice to look at, but I go for the feisty type.

The Quiet Man's up next.

Guess I'm a homebody tonight.

It's been a wonderful month long birthday celebration on Turner Classic Movies. I remember watching "True Grit" in a small community hall in Point Basrrow Alaska. The Eskimo's "got it" immediately and clapped when he charged across the field with guns blazing!

Since this movie was property of the Air Force we had a late night viewing and I must've seen it four times more before it was packed up and sent back to Fairbanks!

How about another for Bob Hope and Roy Rogers.

Here's another: William Boyd (Hopalong Cassidy). He was a great moral compass for young boys. He cared about kids, presented ideals for living in his films, and had the best series of B-Westerns ever filmed.

John Wayne, 'Hoppy', Roy, Gene Autry, Col. Tim McCoy, Joel McCrea and Randolph Scott will always be my "Action Heroes".

Ah, there you go. In my mind, his best film.

In “The Searchers”, John Wayne delved into the dark side of the human spirit. And its wonderful ending stated the belief that there’s no room for such in human development.

Sorry, but nowhere near true. Tom Mix was a silent screen star. Speaking movies began in 1927. I'm 63, and Tom Mix was my dad's favorite Western hero (my dad being born in 1905). Tom Mix died in 1940 (Look up his IMDB bio). Audie Murphy was a 2nd World War hero, and died in 1971.

I don't know where you got this from, but it's not true.

Given your username, I'd assume it's named after the character that Ken Curtis played on 'Gunsmoke'. I'll assume you know that Ken Curtis was also John Ford's son-in-law, and was in a number of John Wayne's movies, most notably 'Rio Grande' and 'The Searchers'. In 'Rio Grande' he was the lead singer for the 'Sons of the Pioneers', taking the lead in 'I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen'. In 'The Searchers' he played the guitar playing mail carrier and sometimes law-man Charlie McCorry, who was slated to wed Laurie Jorgensen (Vera Miles) until Martin Pawley, played by Jeffrey Hunter, returned home.

By all accounts, Ken Curtis was a fine man; friendly, gentle, and good to know. These traits could also be said about the real John Wayne.

Actually Festus was himself named after someone and thats where I got mine. When my first kid was on the way and the family asked what I’d name it I said, “Either Festus or Crispus” depending.

Both are New Testament names.

Naturally I didn’t name my kids after either but I did purloin one for a screen name.

Thanks for posting!

My Dad stopped by this morning to pick up tomato, pepper and basil plants for his garden. (I grow them for him.)

He went on and on and on about all the great John Wayne movies that are on this weekend for this very reason. Between “The Duke” and Ronald Reagan, I don’t know who he loves more. :)

Yes, he did and did an excellent job in the part. I also consider it his best film and other than "Red River" don't remember him playing a character similar to that but he was much more accomplished in "The Searchers."
