If there's one thing I've learned from asking readers to send in stories about John Wayne, it's this: people really loved the guy.
Even if they didn't know him personally, many speak of brief encounters with his gentle ways and humorous personality as if they're talking about somebody they've known for years.
The Duke turns 100 years old Saturday, so we thought we'd celebrate with our very own birthday card.

I’ve read many times that whenever his movies appear on TCM or AMC, their ratings shoot through the roof. Been gone 30 years and he’s still a top draw.
IIRC, he was a top ten box office draw for something like 25 years in a row. No one else has come close.
Unbelievable.
Thanks Pilgrim!
When I saw his big scene in True Grit it brought back an early memory

Who is pilgrim?
Don’t you recall John Wayne calling some in his films “Pilgrim”?
Obviously I don’t. I was not a big John Wayne fan but thought you would like the thread.
Father Mulcahy, in one M*A*S*H episode, mentioned he carried a Tom Mix pocket knife.
After two ruffians were shot, Kirk Douglas looked at John Wayne and said "Mine hit the ground first." Wayne then responded "Mine was taller."
Beautiful!
My mom was a big John Wayne fan, and she passed it on to me. We watched a lot of his films together. For a few months after her death, I couldn’t bear to watch any of his movies, because I associated them with her. But I couldn’t stay away from the Duke, and before long I was adding his movies to my Netflix queue, and taping them when they aired on TCM. I’ll always be grateful to my mom for getting me hooked on John Wayne, and I’ll always remember the special times we had watching his movies.
Maybe he married them because they are beautiful women!
He has sold the most movie tickets of any actor ever..STILL. Even with Samuel L Jackson making like 12 films a year..LOL.
Wayne had colon cancer.
Man ....I grew up with Duke....we were stunned when that asshat Dern killed him.

You’re not too old, we’ve just kind got used to losing sight of our own values, one point at a time. The values aren’t gone, their just hidden under mountains of lawyers and special interest groups. Our hearts never lie. Our tears don’t either.
My favorite line was; “Somebody ought to hit [belt?] you, Pilgrim, but I ain’t gonna do it. The hell I ain’t!” to Leo V. Gordon]
“Never apologize. It’s a sign of weakness” [Cpt. Nathan Brittles]
Think ya got lotsa company on that one......
