Live Thread: Senate Immigration/Amnesty Debate, 5/24/07 (Coleman-Bond Amendment, etc.)

Today's debate is just beginning. President Bush is also speaking in the Rose Garden today at 11:00 EST on this issue and war funding. (A Live Thread is up on that one too.)
I have to leave today so I can only check in periodically. Thus far Menendez (D of New Jersey) is slamming the Coleman-Bond amendment, which will REQUIRE that states and municipalities permanently END "Sanctuary Cities." Of course, his reasoning is tortured; he's pulled out the old crying towel, and is already playing the the Nazi card ("Your papers, please.")
Another amendment will be debated today as well but thus far I have no information on that one.

Apologies, folks. It sounded like he just called it the "CORNYN" amendment. It sure sounded like "COLEMAN" before.
Moderator, if some nice FReeper could help me clarify this I'll ask if you could kindly fix my headline. Thanks.

I wish. I know Menendez started the day off by saying they would be debating TWO amendments, so we know another one will be offered up later today.

And I am sad to say that I have 3, young adult sons who think their mom is off her rocker, that this whole immigration thing is “no big deal”. Nothing I say convinces them otherwise...they’ve completely tuned me out.
FYI...for those who didn’t see the thread...Bush presser coming up on Fox regarding Iraq and Immigration Bill.

COLEMAN INTRODUCES AMENDMENT TO CLOSE SANCTUARY LOOPHOLE AND ALLOW FEDERAL-LOCAL COMMUNICATION
...Senator Colemans legislation will not require local law enforcement to use their own resources to enforce federal immigration laws. Moreover, it does not require local law enforcement to conduct immigration raids or act as federal agents. Senator Colemans bill will simply give law enforcement officers the ability to inquiry about a persons immigration status during their routine investigations, and in turn report their findings to the appropriate Federal authorities though already-established channels, as they are currently required to do by law. ...

What a waste of time. Sanctuary policies are already illegal, just ask Rudy who was on the losing end of those court decisions. What does it possibly matter if cities have sanctuary policies when this bill will make the entire United States a sanctuary for illegal invaders.

Yesterday, I believe, Cornyn introduced a bill/amendment to bar felons. I think Grassley also introduced a bill/amendment yesterday. I also thought I read somewhere that Kyl (I think) and Sessions offered amendments also, but unsure.
I do remember last year (2006) that Cornyn-Kyl introduced an Immigration Bill to counter the McCain-Kennedy Immigration (Fiasco) Bill. They may come back.

Done been to both of their offices and spoke with the worker bees there and told them in no uncertain terms what I thought of this “Great American Give Away Scam”. They were quite upset too.
