I have had bosses like that, too. One in particular comes to mind. She took one look at me and just hated me. She made my life hell, but I loved the job so I stuck it out and she eventually got fired.
My problem boss was a woman as well. I have the belief that had she grown up male, her bad attitude would have been pounded out of her before it could become habit.
