A rebellion is defined as "open, armed, and usually unsuccessful defiance of or resistance to an established government." That's an accurate description of the southern actions. No, you're wrong again. The southern states were trying to secede from the constitution en masse, not resist the established government. Your definition of rebellion works better with a street riot. Another liberal, Wlat, had a bad habit of trying to shoehorn his own definitions into the debate as well.

The South was trying to do versus the North what the American colonies had done versus Great Britain.
The Yankees had rethought the War of Independence and decided that King George was right, after all.

Another liberal, Wlat, had a bad habit of trying to shoehorn his own definitions into the debate as well. Since their acts of unilateral secession were illegal then their conduct bore a resemblence to a street riot.
