Educators say the need for remedial work is fueled largely by a lack of communication between high schools and colleges about what’s important to know. They also say high school students need to pay closer attention to class selection and grades, especially in the senior year when many coast toward graduation day.

That's a load of crap, the HS educators are just to wussified to demand any academic excellence from the students.

Additionally, there's gotten to be some bizarre idea that every single person is fit for higher education, and if it's not in the sciences well by god there'll be a degree for lawn care, pottery and underwater fire prevention too. It's a racket now, whereas 75 years ago, university degrees were a calling...

What percentage of eighteen year olds do you believe CAN be prepared to do college-level work, assuming the best mix of teachers, classes, and funding in high school?

I say it's less than 30%.

I actually took a couple of these remedial class just for jollies. Very darn tedious but not at the irk level of the mesmerizing Econ 101.

We have the same problem here at the University of Nevada. I got on a local talk show and suggested that the names of the students and their high schools be published in the paper as a basic means of quality control. The president of the university thought my suggestion was “too harsh.” What a soft nation we have become!

so exactly how much are we paying our teachers and administrators to not know what the students in school need to know?

I understand that this article is about "Colorado's public colleges" so perhaps they have to take all applicants--but they should know from the SAT scores how unqualified some kids are.

The legislature should require a higher standard for admission to these schools.

I guess that would require courage--a trait not taught in the public schools.

I'm calling BS on this.

I graduated from a top-level catholic high school in NY, with Honors, near the top of my class. I was never an academic slcaker. Didn't slack off my senior year, either; I took extra courses and only had 20 minutes for lunch every other day (the remaining days, I was eating lunch while I worked on my assignments). No studies, frees, or anything of the sort.

I attended a private university for 2 years, before changing to a public university for 1 year to get away from an abusive relationship. At the public university, they insisted I take a remedial math course.

I was pissed! Asked the professor if I could take the final; if I didn't pass, I'd attend the class. No go. Sat through instructions (in an accent so heavy, I spent more time trying to figure out what he was saying than learning anything) until the mid-term. Aced the midterm, dropped out until the final, aced that, and then cursed the school for wasting my time and money.

I'm wondering how many of these remedial classes are actually necessary!

This is what happens with a government-run school monopoly: no one is accountable for results. So students graduate unprepared for college level work since the Colorado high schools already met the pro forma requirements. Its irrelevant if they made sure students were prepared for college level work.

Duh.

High school graduates aren't prepared for college and college graduates aren't prepared for real life.

A bit "thank you" to the liberal education system.

Socialism does not work well. It often leads to declining value - less benefit received for the money spent. That has certainly been the case with education. Private schools, vouchers, home schooling are all valid alternatives. But when it comes to spending the public’s money, vouchers are the way to go.
