Ron Paul says he sounds like Taft but he’s no Taft ~ more like a General Walker on Prozac.

Gerald Ford or Nelson Rockefeller

Not the best examples. Ford, while a good man, lost his bid for election in his own right. The best Nelson Rockefeller could do was VP candidate on that same losing ticket. A ticket that lost to Jimmah Carter and Walter Mondale for Pete's sake.

Whoever wins the Republican nomination will find a much stronger and more resilient party base than most party critics now surmise.

File this column under "Whistling past the graveyard". If he's a moderate, though, then he is probably secretly hoping that conservatives abandon the party so that the RINO's and liberal Dems can continue their efforts to detroy America as we know it.

I think the word "apocalypse" has to be defined. Does that mean losing elections? Well, we lost a bunch in 2006 and will lose more in 2008. But the author is correct--the opposition is the GOP's best friend, and the word apocalypse is overblown.

However, if we mean becoming whores, voting for unprincipled, "pragmatic" or "compassionate" (i.e. "Not") conservatives just because they're Republicans, then yes, the apocalypse is here. It began in January of 1989.

Your profile is riveting, but your characterization of Ron Paul is wrong.
