A transportation panel appointed by Gov. Bill Ritter and charged with taking public input around the state the rest of this year is, "little more than an attempt to justify the governor's next big tax hike," Senate Republican leader Andy McElhany said today.
The veteran Colorado Springs lawmaker, who has made transportation a cornerstone of the Republican agenda, said a sustainable mechanism for transportation-funding already exists, "if only the General Assembly can refrain from siphoning money off of it to grow other programs."
"These blue-ribbon panels that bring together notable experts and interested citizens are fine and well if all we want to do is figure out where we want to go on a particular policy issue," McElhany said. "When it comes to transportation, however, most Coloradans already know where they want to go and have known it for a long time. They want better highways."
"We don't need to raise taxes, but if that's what the governor really wants, let him put it on the table now rather than putting us through the drill of another blue-ribbon panel," McElhany said. "Let's not insult taxpayers' intelligence."

The Colorado Department of Transportation rolled out its summer plans for area road improvement projects to the Garfield County commissioners Monday.
Also discussed was CDOT’s 25-year plan for Region 3, which covers 14 counties in western Colorado.
Weldon Allen, transportation director of CDOT’s Region 3, said the department has set aside $93.9 million for road improvements. But when you consider that’s got to last for 25 years, “That doesn’t build much and surely doesn’t design anything,” he said.
Further, the financially strapped agency will see a steady decrease in funding over the next few years. Region 3 is set to receive $3.9 million in 2008. That will be cut considerably the following year, with a road budget of $1.7 million.

They love their suv’s and many that I know personally say that their goal is to get us out of our cars so that they can drive their suv’s on uncrowded roads.
True story.
I have often seen several liberal democrats go to public meetings alone in individual suv’s and leave alone to go to a group county commissioner site visit.
They would never ride the bus to a RTD meeting.
That is for the ‘little people.’
There really is a double standard. They are ok with it because they really believe that they are superior to us.
It is ok for them to fly private jets and to drive anything if you say the ‘pc’ stuff.
The media gives them cover as long as everyone stays within the rules.
Thanks for the information.
It amazes me how some people can say there is not a difference between Democrats and Republicans. All someone has to do is look at the bills our legislature is passing and the ones Tax Ritter is signing to see the differences.
And yes, there are some Republicans just as bad, but at least we have conservatives to hold them back.
I do hope Freepers will call or fax Ritter to veto HB1313. This is the CO version of amnesty/safe city for illegal aliens that’s passed the legislature and on his desk.

He’s also Catholic! Go figure....
Ritter tends to be as predictable as a windsock. Like our Democrat Senator, Salazar, the Democrats here will say anything to get elected and then revert to form and bowing down to their special interest groups.
Colorado IS, however, getting exactly what we voted for.
This one ?
a rollback on immigration reform.
House Bill 1313...a person would be able to prove legal residency by simply providing documents from a list of unverifiable items, such as marriage licenses and affidavits from non-profit organizations.
document forgery for such items as divorce decrees and state IDs will skyrocket if the proposal is signed by the governor.
It opens the door to all kinds of potential fraud, explained Schultheis. Its a complete undoing of House Bill 1023
Yep, this is the one.
I have the list of who voted for it too, and if anyone wants to give the name of a senator or representative I’ll be happy tell you how they voted.
