Isolation. With an 11-months-a-year Congress, they spend all their time in D.C. The whole time they’re there, they get their news from The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the four TV networks. And the only people they talk to are their staffers, other congress-critters, bureaucrats, and lobbyists.
Back before air conditioning, Congress used to take August (and most of July) off. Everybody went back to their districts, and had to live with (and answer to) their constituents for a month or so. Now they only get home for fund-raising, which by its nature limits their contacts to people who already agree with them.
And there’s another factor. Today nearly all Senators and many House members can be described as “very wealthy.” The high percentage of rich people (some very rich) is a significant change from 50 years ago. When “very wealthy” people return home, it’s to the country clubs and gated communities. Even in the red states, the circles Congresspeople move in tend to be internationalist and fuzzy-liberal. And the only “average citizens” they’re likely to encounter are the illegal aliens who do the lawn mowing.
So yes, I can understand the ignorance. Of course they’re ignorant. They spend their whole life in a bubble, and they just don’t f*ckin’ know it.

I’ve been there
Fred Barnes dwives me nutz. His point of view, even if we are somewhat on the same side of the coin on any given issue, is still so skewed and peculiar. He’s always just a little bit off in his analysis, and basically has very little to add to a debate. On immigration, he’s really off the wall. No logic involved, and he totally ignores those points he doesn’t wish to hear as if they don’t exist. And Barnes intentionally and consistently tries to blur the lines between being a legal immigrant and being an illegal one, in his attempt to justify this immigration bill. He’s a big business RINO, with a corporate point of view that lacks a base in morality. $$$ uber alles. Regardless if it wrecks our country in the interim. Can’t watch him.
And Fox Cable News Brit Hume’s show, fair and balanced my derriere. There isn’t one person on any of their panels, with the exception of Charles Krauthammer, that isn’t a RINO or is so inside the beltway that the world outside of it barely exists. Boy, do they need an injection of new blood on their panels. All old hat, no new ideas, no true conservatives, and that includes, I’m afraid, Brit too, who is basically for this immigration bill in general. Such a disappointment. I find myself watching Glenn Beck a lot now, as an antidote to Fox News.

You said it . ALL our politicians are now millionaires , using their positions for personal gain and business purposes. Public be damned . I say we clean house across the board .
Equity is for sale to anyone, as far as I know. The Chinese and Saudis must own a lot of our corporations. I’ve heard that a decision by the Chinese to dump our equity could spell devaluation on the stock exchanges.

But with the Senate, was it not a part of the Constitutional plan that Senators were NOT popularly elected; they were supposed to be elected by the various state legislatures?
We got away from this with some cockamamie Amendment in the early 20th Century.
We should return to the original way, because the state legislatures, IMHO, tend to be more conservative than our national legislature.
At any rate, we need less mob rule and need to restore the Constitution, especially this key aspect to legislation.
This Amendment should indeed be repealed. The arguments given in the above article for its creation are specious as h$ll:
It says that following the Civil War the Democrats and newly emerging Republicans in several legislatures were engaged in divisive arguments and as a result never "got around to" electing Senators... man that sounds so bogus.
Anyway, Rats are Rats, whether in the Progressive era c. 1912 or today.
The Seventeenth Amendment is a power grab and of course would lead to more mob (i.e., Democrat) rule.
Today they continue the power grab by trying to do away with the Electoral College.
Repeal the Seventeenth Amendment indeed.

I doubt that will happen, as they would incur tarrifs, and other trade problems.
Right now, the chinese are investing heavily in commercial real estate and technology(no doubt trying to steal the technology)

It's not only the Upper Class who are operating out of guilt.
It is now the upper-middle class, two-earner households who rely on nannies and landscapers to mitigate their lifestyles. More and more houseplans here in California include a first floor bed-and-bath for the servant, and the Professional Classes here who spend hours on the road commuting, have turned to live-in help to make life work.
I doubt they pay Social Security or purchase Health Care Plans for their Spanish-speaking help.
Very very telling. This is what Rush Limbaugh calls class warfare. Only he denigrates it but here it's real. Fred Barnes types are waging class warfare on my family and others like mine

Mrs. Barnes doesn’t swab her own toilet, and hasn’t for a very long time. Fred knows better than to suggest she do her own housework—so he pretends he can’t hear the “ill” in “illegal.”
Do you have a rough idea of percentages of stocks and futures owned by foreign investors? Any particulars of specific nationalities and specific market segments would be fascinating. Open sources would also be very useful.
