XM Service Update

As many of you know, XM customers have experienced service outages or significantly degraded service since Monday mid-morning, May 21.

We quickly identified the problem and are working hard to return to our normal levels of service. The problem occurred during the loading of software to a critical component of our satellite broadcast system, which resulted in a loss of signal from one of our satellites. We expect normal service to resume midday today (eastern daylight time).

XM apologizes for any inconvenience this has caused. For updates, please go to http://www.xmradio.com.

In the meantime, you can enjoy many of our music channels on XM Radio Online (http://xmro.xmradio.com) if you are close to a computer.

Again, we regret any inconvenience for not having your XM Radio service fully available.

Received just now via email. There was a thread yesterday regarding the spotty coverage, so here is the explaination from XMSR.

It's always the software!

I just received an update saying that full service has now been restored. We were getting drop-outs yesterday afternoon but now ours is solid reception.

Yes, well, here in the Burgh, they can work all they want.

When there is nothing on the air, like here, it really doesn’t matter.

XM Radio outages continue on, software to blame
Posted May 22nd 2007 12:41PM by Darren Murph
Filed under: Portable Audio, Wireless

For the XM Radio subscribers who haven’t patiently waited to hastily cancel your subscription just yet, we’re sure you’re well aware that the outages from yesterday are still lingering on. Reportedly, “software problems resulted in the loss of one of the network’s four satellite signals,” and while it expected to have everything back to normal by last night, sometime today is looking more likely. The company stated that “the problem occurred during the loading of software to a critical component of the satellite broadcast system,” and while XM has urged listeners to tune in online if possible, we all know this doesn’t solve much. Notably, analysts are already pondering just how much loyalty (and cashflow) XM will lose from such an outage, and while we won’t bother to guess, each passing minute of dead air won’t do the customer satisfaction surveys any favors.

*UPDATE*

XM is claiming service is back to normal.

There are a number of stories about software uploads that have screwed up satellites and space missions.

The fatal ones wreck the spacecraft's ability to keep the solar panels pointed at the Sun. Once the batteries die, that's it.

Most recently, I think a Mars mission died sooner than expected because of an upload last fall. Don't remember the details.

That's because you're from Texas and they didn't want to mess with you.

Seriously, it was the east coast satellite which broke. When I pulled up the signal meter on my XM yesterday Sat1 and terrestrial were at 100% error rate and Sat2 was right around 0%. I guess Ohio is far enough west to receive Satellite 2.

I have both XM, and Sirius, and find Sirius far superior to XM anyway. I will be glad when the merge so I can receive Margarittaville on my Honda’s XM radio.

The satellite that feeds to the ground repeaters was not transmitting, so no terrestrial signal.

The XM terrestrial is the only radio signal I can get in my NYC office, and I spent yesterday starved of news and talk. Glad to have it back!

Superior sound quality or programming (or both)?
