Ah, but he's wrong - you CAN say that. It's just a matter of how you say it.
"As a white I have an unfair advantage in that I can recommend a person of another race for a promotion without angering co-workers of my own race."
(I actually heard that in a cultural-diversity workshop a few years ago. But note how it implicitly assigns to whites the responsibility of making amends for the racism of non-whites.)
