I’ve tried to figure out President Bush’s stance on immigration for awhile now. Here are some things that have run through my brain at various times that I posted on another thread. Dennisw replied that he thinks it might be an all of the above answer.
1. He thinks it’s the Christian thing to do to help out all the poor Mexicans that come here—he genuinely sympathizes with them/their plight.
2. He lives in a sheltered la, la land where the affects (current and future) of these policies on your average American just do not enter his brain—either by choice (not wanting to know) or he can’t even comprehend it.
3. He’s stubborn and he’s made this his policy and he won’t back down no matter what.
4. He has an affinity for people from South America—likes their music, food, drinks, and thinks the women and babies are cute :)
5. He believes they are good for the country and the costs of having them here do not outweigh the benefits.
6. He’s doing it for the corporations/economy.
7. He’s looking forward to and trying to implement a future where the borders are erased.
8. He’s doing it under the notion that if we appease them and buy them off now, they’ll vote Republican in the future.
9. The problem is too big and it’s easier to just call them all legal and solve it that way—afterall, no other president has tried to solve it in a meaningful way.
10. He sees a future population deficit and they are the most convenient way to fill it.
