McCain Hits Romney (Dueling RINO Alert)
latestpolitics.com ^ | 05/21/2007 | Ryan Sager

Mitt Romney has been trying to make quite a bit of political hay out of the compromise immigration bill — he sees it as one of John McCain's key weaknesses as relates to the Republican base and a great way to differentiate himself as the One True Conservative in the race (at least until Fred Thompson jumps in).

Well, today, on a conference call with bloggers, Mr. McCain fired back at the former Massachusetts governor, who has (of course) held varying positions on immigration over the years. "Maybe I should wait a couple weeks and see if it changes," Mr. McCain said of Mr. Romney's position on immigration this week. "Maybe he can get out his small varmint gun and drive those Guatemalans off his yard."

More after the jump...

I caught some of Mark Levin’s show today. Levin counted up to 7 McCain flip-flops, including Roe v Wade, when I had to go.

The way AmericanMade1776 left this was to indict and smearing all Romney supporters and that was not true.

If anything when the RS do PM its is to remind each other to take it easy on the critics stay focus, not to get personal!

Our buttons get pushed but it nice to have a friend to say take a breath!

I don’t appreciate AmericanMade1776 wording when I never ever ping him!

Restornu, I think you're reading too much into this. Frankly, I thought AmericanMade1775 had a good point. We should fight our battles in the open and for whatever I may have done to foster such "behind the scenes plotting", I express my regret.

It is my intent now, as it has always been, to present this forum with Mitt's side of the story and I will continue to do so to the best of my ability. That people disagree with me is to be expected. I only desire to get Mitt's side out there and let posters and lurkers alike decide for themselves if Mitt could be their man as I believe he could.

I repeat I have NEVER PM AmericanMade1775, for any reason!

("We") should fight our battles in the open and for whatever I may have done to foster such "behind the scenes plotting", I express my regret.

I am clueless about any behind the scene plotting!

let me be clear about plotting against any particular person such as EV!

Romney on Immigration: Where's The Flip? Where's The Flop?

McCainiacs and Thompson Kool-Aid drinkers eagerly claim Mitt Romney has flip-flopped on illegal immigration. Reviewing the basis for that claim compels the conclusion that it is very empty indeed.

The Washington Times reported on March 15, 2006:
An enthusiastic supporter of legal immigration, Mr. Romney not only opposes illegal immigration, but he told National Review that he is also "against an amnesty and against anything that provides an incentive for people to come here illegally."
What exactly did Romney tell National Review in late 2005?
In the future, Romney may want to pick some battles he can win. Perhaps illegal immigration will be one of them, given its rising importance among grassroots conservatives. "I'm very much in favor of legal immigration and I'm opposed to illegal immigration," says Romney. "We're in a race for the best minds, and I wish we could bring in more of these people." Last year, the governor threatened to veto a bill that would have allowed illegal aliens to obtain driver's licenses, but the legislation never made it to his desk. He actually did veto a bill that would have given illegal aliens the right to in-state tuition at public universities. He hasn't taken a formal position on any of the federal immigration plans. "I'm against an amnesty and against anything that provides an incentive for people to come here illegally." [Emphasis added.]
That was in NR's cover story for the December 14, 2005 issue.

Some are claiming that this 49-second bit of audio, supposedly from a Boston Globe interview with Romney at about the same time, on November 30, 2005, establishes him as pro-amnesty. I defy any reader to listen to this clip and draw a firm, supportable conclusion from it. Nothing he says in this Globe clip is inconsistent with what he told National Review. Romney is simply quoted as describing McCain's proposal as "reasonable" and perhaps "not amnesty." He does not say he is endorsing the proposal.

That is a flip-flop? That is an endorsement of McCain-Kennedy?

Romney's record as governor of Massachusetts also belies any claim that he is soft on immigration:
2003 - Eliminates Bilingual Education, Enacts English Immersion
2004 - Vetoes College Tuition For Illegals
2004 - Opposes Driver's License's For Illegals
7/2006 - Supports Building A Wall Along The Entire Border
9/2006 - Works To Enact Program For State To Cooperate With Feds To Enforce Immigration Laws
So I'd encourage everyone not to fall so deeply in love with the "Romney is a flip-flopper" meme that you find flips-- or flops-- where none exist.

I am sorry if I gave that impression, only recieved messages from three supporters concerning Eternal Vigliance and the debate. None of them were threatending to Eternal Vigilance, but they are about him, and well , I don't want to hear it in emails. Hey I am a Romney supporter too. I have no problem with anything said to Eternal Vigilance in a post (although I hear one Mitt supporter was banned for threatening him in a post--and well that is not good) , I just don't want it spewing into my email box. I do like being pinged about Mitt Romney in the news.

Keep calling his office. When he calls us “yahoos” we win. I'm holding out for him to call us "agents of intolerance". But I'll settle for him screaming "who took my strawberries"

It can't be long now. We're already "Extracurricular Politics", it's not a big jump from that to Agents Of Intolerance, Yahoos, Dumbasses, etc.
