A provision requiring payment of back taxes had been in the initial version of a bill proposed by Senator Edward M. Kennedy, the Massachusetts Democrat. But the administration called for the provision to be removed due to concern that it would be too difficult to figure out which illegal immigrants owed back taxes
Laura Capps, a spokeswoman for Kennedy, said a provision for requiring back taxes was in Kennedys original bill and that [DHS Secretary Michael] Chertoff called for it to be removed. Chertoff thought it would be too challenging to accurately determine the amount of an applicants back taxes, she said
Pete Sepp, spokesman for the National Taxpayers Union, which says it has 362,000 members, was stunned that the provision was removed. While saying it would be difficult to come up with a precise estimate of the amount of back taxes owed by undocumented residents, he said it would be in the tens of billions of dollars, with a similar amount in fines for failure to pay the taxes.
Too challenging, you see. In contrast to, say, the bureaucracy thats going to be needed to enforce the moronic, purely symbolic touchback requirement. Thats not too challenging.
The real reason they stripped it is because they know illegals wouldnt comply with it, just like many of them arent going to comply by paying the $5,000 penalty. Which is why thatll end up being stripped too.
Amazing arrogance. We have the GOP working this deal which insures Dem sovereignty, bankrupts social security, and imports a permanant 40M underpriveledged class.
Harriet Myers, Dubai Ports deal and now this. Forget about offense, time to handcuff this Administration for the remaining two years before more damage is done!
I honestly think Congress have lost their minds. Are they so far removed from the reality in which the rest of us live that they could actually propose this?
It would seem so. Until this moment I did not fully appreciate how out of touch there people are.
By the time the senate debates this “bill”, with the multitudes of amendments, then the house version with all their amendments, then the committee to resolve (or whatever its called)...we will not even be able to recognize the bill as what was presented this last week, when it comes up for a vote.
“Chertoff thought it would be too challenging...”
No surprise there.
Seems like many things, including securing the border, are too challenging for Mr. Chertoff.
Perhaps we should all consider withholding our taxes.
bttt
Isn’t that special.
And the news just gets better and better.
And at the same time that illegal immigrants are being forgiven for any back taxes owed, millions of U.S. citizens are going to be forced to pay higher taxes due to the Alternative Minimum Tax.
“...where do I sign up to get in this immigrant line to get them all ignored?”
Someone (Mark Steyn?) on NRO’s the Corner blog (I think) suggested that if this abomination becomse law that WE ALL go and apply for these z1 visas.
I find that idea most amusing, in an Alice’s restaurant kind of way.
We’ve seen the same attitude for some time now. If it’s too hard to accomplish, don’t do it. Unless I’m mistaken, doing the hard thing, even though it’s right, is the job of Congress.
Why not? Don't they keep telling us we're all "the children of immigrants?"
Can’t figure the back taxes? Just charge the Alternate Minimum Tax.
Don’t like that idea? Then repeal the AMT.
The next some leftwing wacko sats that Bush should be impeached,I’m going to offer my support.
There are quite a few citizens who owe back taxes that may be "too difficult to figure out". Shall we relieve the illegals from this obligation without offering relief to those who are legal residents?

--George Orwell
You mean they'll figure out a way to screw over law-abiding, tax-paying citizens in even more grand fashion?
Great so do I have to pay the back taxes for the illegal that been using my SSN to report income the last 10 years ?
