In my post, which you quoted, I said, "Isn’t there a provision that punishes employers who hire illegals? If they can’t work, they may take this law seriously." You didn't answer that.

Sorry, ignored that part, just like employers ignore the provision in current law that forbids hiring illegals. The law that punishes those who hire illegals that is not enforced. So they don't take the law seriously now, why would they magically take the law seriously with this bill?

They are illegals. No law applies to them. Must have insurance to drive? Eh, ignore it. Must have a license? Ignored. It is a pattern - why suddenly obey one way when you've ignored so many others without penalty. And besides, eventually the gringos will just get rid of the laws that they've been ignoring, to make new ones to ignore.

40% of the illegals went for amnesty last time. 4 out of 10. Sixty percent just ignored it like they ignored every other law.

You can't reward criminals for their behavior. It just doesn't work, never will work.

As for Mexican drug cartels - what about child prostitution? The point is, you can name any number of social ills, and right at the center is a group of lawless people who continue to perform these acts because, hey, it's just yet another law to ignore.

I'm beginning to think that we are going to have to take over Mexico.

Seriously.

After all, it's not such a stretch to regard every single person on the planet as a Z-1-in-waiting. This being America, pretty soon -- a court decision here, a court decision there -- the presumption of every school district and hospital and welfare administrator will be that they're obliged to treat everyone who walks in through the door as if they were a Z-1. You zee one, you've zeen 'em all.

NOW I get it. The globalists like bush, clintons, mccain, soros, gore, most CEOs, et. al., want to make the world into America by making every person in the world a citizen of the U.S. It won't be America anymore, but they can proudly say "look how we've expanded our in$luence!"

And we all should take this problem seriously — Steyn included.

You may not want to hear this, but it's true: Steyn - having personally gone through the U.S. immigration system from his own permanent resident application to his present status as a naturalized U.S. citizen - has a great deal more insight into that system than anyone who has not, which obviously is about 95 percent of the U.S. population.

I have been through it vicariously with my wife, who also is now a U.S. citizen. So I think I also have a good grasp of INS/DHS/CIS operations.

Which is why I can assert that the following is the most important paragraph in Steyn's essay. Read it once, twice, ten times, until the meaning is fully grasped:

"As for the notion that dumping a population the size of four mid-size European Union nations into the lap of America's arthritic "legal immigration" .... to mandate that "incompetent" now means "competent" is a tougher proposition.

Steyn is saying here something most American citizens do not know: DHS/CIS is the worst and most incompetent agency in the federal government, and this is well known on Capitol Hill and by the State Dept. My own Senator's staffers once told me that DHS/CIS generates more consitituent complaints than any other agency by a magnitude.

As Steyn points out, Congress (which knows of the agency's cataclysmic problems) is poised to drop 15 million new Z-1 visa applicants into that agency, not to mention the 20 to 50 million new Z-2 and Z-3 family visas that are certain to follow.

DHS/CIS has been struggling with it current annual caseload of about 3.5 million applications of various kinds (e.g., family visa, change of status applications, etc), plus about 1/2 million N400 naturalization applications. How do you think it will function when that caseload jumps from 5 million to 16 million or more?

And bear in mind that one single applicant doesn't generate only a single approval process. In fact there are at least 5, and these are normall handled by the State Department, not DHS/CIS. They include (1) medical approval, (2) NCIC criminal check (3) "security check" (???), (4) federal tax and finances verification, (5) document verification (e.g., Mexican birth certificates, etc., and more.

So one among many "elephants in the living room" is: who will do the forgoing work? Who pays? How long wil it take? How much will it cost? Where will all the paper files be stored?

But more importantly, neither you nor most of the people talking about this bill, talk constuctively about fixing this problem.

1. CONTROL THE BORDER. That means a fence. Build it.

2. Prosecute employers who hire illegals. Prosecute those who help illegals enter and provide them with fake documents. Prosecute those who knowingly shelter and aid illegals. Remove all federal funds from state and local governments that harbor and aid illegals.

4. Begin deporting the worst offenders. Those in prison who are being released. Those who have had felony convictions who we can find. Those picked up for offenses like DWI, no drivers license etc etc.

5.Pass a law that states that anyone caught in this country illegally is forever barred from legal residence or citizenship.

6. Remove the "anchor baby" provision.

Do that and many if not most illegals will head home voluntarily. As the "sea" in which the illegals swim shrinks it will get harder and harder for them to function.

....and also classic Bush.Clueless as ever.Losing all political clout because of a war with a country he couldn’t find with a map, never mind the ramifications if we took over the country.
Colin Powell was wrong when he told Bush “You break you own it” Its more like you break we own it.
Just like the immigration bill you break it,you are now the fine owner of 12 million criminal aliens and their 30 brothers and cousins on the welfare roles.

Steyn has written a very glib article about a very serious problem. We must get control of our borders.

Close but no prize. Before we get control of our borders, we must get control of our government because the existing government will not control the borders!!!

Try this on for size (from Hugh Hewitt.com; even this former amnesty fan is seeing the light):

Section 601(h) Treatment of Applicants

(1)IN GENERAL --An alien who files application for Z-nonimmigrant status shall, upon submission of any evidence required under paragraphs (f) and (g) and after the Secretary has conducted appropriate background checks, to include name and fingerprint checks, that have not by the end of the next business day produced information rendering the applicant ineligible

(A)be granted probationary benefits in the form of employment authorization pending final adjudication of the alien's application;

(B)may in the Secretary's discretion receive advance permission to re-enter the United States pursuant to existing regulations governing advance parole;

(C)may not be detained for immigration purposes, dteremined inadmissible or deportable, or removed pending final adjudication of the alien's application, unless the alient isdetermined to be ineligible for Z nonimmigration status; and

(D) may not be cosndiered an unauthorized alien (as defined in Section 274A(h)(3) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1324a(h)(3))) unless employment authorization under subparagraph (A) is denied.

Hugh's comments:

Section 601(h)(2), (3), (4), (5), and (6) lay out additional provisions concerning this huge --indeed almost certainly 90% plus?-- portion of the illegals currently in the country that are not subject to the "triggers," and even notes in subparagraph (5) that if an illegal is arrested or detained prior to filing hisor her application for Z permit status, "the Secretary shall provide the alien with a reasonable opportunity to file an application under this section after such regulations are promulgated." Unless the computer spits out a no within 2 days of submitting the application, the illegal gets probationary Z status --before even one more mile of fence is built or a workplace verification system is constructed.

Perhaps I am wrong, but I can only read Section 601(h) as a massive undercutting of the entire concept of "triggers," an undercutting which various talking points have not underscored or quantified, which points to why the jam down demanded by Senator McCain is so reprehensible. Ordinary citizens have almost zero chance of figuring out what this bill intends and how its provisions will interact, and the proxies on whom they might rely will hardly have any opportunity to fully vet the language.

This is Amnesty.

And waiting until the next election may not be sufficient.

Haven’t you read the stories where Walmart and chicken processors have been fined for hiring illegals?............

.............Have you seen how effective that law has been in keeping illegals from working in this country? The current law punishing employers who hire illegals is totally ineffective as anyone with even half a brain and the slightest knowledge of current events is well aware of,.........

Have you noticed that the raids and fines are few and far between and result in only a few employers being prosecuted, small fines levied and only a handful deported. Those actions are for the 6 o'clock news to calm the public and lull them into believing that the government is actually enforcing immigration laws.

Wake up, clear the cobwebs out of your head, take off the rose colored glasses and see the real world and how the federal government serves its real masters, the corporations.

“If you believe that workplace enforcement is impossible, even when significantly strengthened, then what do you propose?”

I’m sorry, but the current immigration laws that were revamped in 1986 have “workplace enforcement” provisions. Can’t we just try to enforce the laws we have before we say “pay us a $5,000 bribe and we will waive our current laws.”

Here is what I propose .... remove the incentives that attract illegal aliens (at least the incentives that would encourage me to break the law to live in the U.S.).

First, pass a law (a Constitutional amendment if necessary) that allows schools to confirm citizenship prior to enrolling students in public schools.

Second, pass a law (a Constitutional amendment if necessary) that allows hospitals to deny treatment to known illegal immigrants and to request proof of citizenship.

Third, pass some form of national sales tax with a “prebate”. Every citizen would recieve $1,000 per family per month to offset the sales tax on essentials of living. Illegals would be forced to pay the sales tax and would not receive the prebate. The would therefore be forced to pay a “penalty” for living here illegally, instead of being rewarded.

Of course, it won’t be easy to overcome the prevailing cowardice, but it is worth a shot.

Why bother worrying about having been in America to apply and win the immigration lottery in the first place? Simply apply for Z-1 status and get your Z-1 Visa from wherever you are.

I'm sure anybody in the world will be able to buy all the "proof" they need of having been here before January 1, 2007 over the Internet or from a local counterfeiting operation. After all, how tough can forging a utility bill or phony (really phony) SS card or other false ID be that "proves" you were here? You won't even need to pay a coyote. All you'll need is an Internet connection and a stolen VISA number!

Who is going to know, care, or even be able to tell the difference or even check? Our completely overwhelmed Immigration Service bureaucracy already has an eight year backlog of legal applicants. Don't make me laugh.

If this bill passes, anybody from anywhere gets to come here and live. America is finished.

So, when the political class is in lockstep bipartisan mode, that's sufficiently unusual all by itself. When it's in bipartisan mode on an issue on which the public is diametrically opposed, that looks less like bipartisanship and more like the lockstep myopia of an out-of-touch one-party state.

The "new tone in Washington." W has turned us into a government with a country, rather than a country with a government.

Oh, I see. You propose 2 constitutional amendments instead of implementing the verification system that has been tested to combat all the document fraud and identity theft that has undermined workplace enforcement. Check back with me in 15 years when you are through with that.

He said there is no difference between this wave of immigration and the immigration of the early 1920’s.

People who rely on this comparison and others like it are ignorant of the facts and hiding from reality. Immigration, one ship full at a time, through Ellis Island, was one thing. What we are in the midst of now is a mass migration of historic scale--the shifting of a population-- and it cannot possibly be good for this nation.

The failure of the political hacks and sellouts in Washington to appreciate this, from Bush on down through the Congress, is a crime and a shame.

Isn’t there a provision that punishes employers who hire illegals

Those laws have been on the books for years. Only in the last year or so, since the political heat has been turned up, have they been enforced. Once the heat from this dies down, expect the enforcement laws to be tabled once again.

McCain, Sheets Byrd, The Swimmer, and a few others are fine examples of how badly we need federal term limits, or at least a cut-off age for eligibility.

A bunch of old mush brains that need to be reminded to breathe from time to time are not the people you want deciding on how things should be run for the next decade or several.
