This isn’t really big news. We prepare for every eventuality no matter how unlikely. Gordon has continually stated that he’ll keep on fighting.

Brown will be under enormous pressure from many if not most Labour party MPs to withdraw from Iraq asap. Don’t doubt it.

..."and unworthy of thoughtful conservatives."

I am afraid, I am seeing fewer and fewer of the species, even on FR. Many just jump on the headline[s] without checking the source or reading further and processing actual information and quotes, or giving a thought to contradictions and/or second-hand "sources" within these articles.

I thought of ignoring your rant, but I thought we might as well talk as people...

Firstly, irony is clearly lost on you.You talk about ‘bailing out’ Britain, then complain we dont realise American sacrifice in ww2.

Taxa, the British DO realise and thank America for its sacrifices.Any Briton who dosent is a bigot, end of.And what do you think it is like for a Briton to read the likes of your comments?....we have had 60 years of ‘saving your ass/bailed you out/you’d be speakin’ German if not for us’ etc etc.

We British have had 60 years of our IMMENSE sacrifice and contribution in ww2 ignored and even ridiculed. How do you think we feel?.Americans to us seem both ignorant and ‘ungrateful’ of what Britain did in TWO world wars....

As to Scotland: I am genuinely sorry that your friend has met some anti-Catholic idiots(I would hazard that he lives in Glasgow?—a lovely city but which does have a bit of religious tension tied in with Northern Ireland because of the large influx of Irish immigrants, both Prot and Cath, over 100 years ago...).However the bigorty you decry is a minority confined within one city.It is a West of Scotland/Glasgow problem, hardly a ‘scottish’ problem.I know,as I live in Ayrshire, just 30 m s/w,where the problem is next to non-existent.

As for hating Americans?....rubbish,utter rubbish.Millions of Americans come here every year and are welcomed with friendliness and hospitality. Many Americans in fact say they find Scotland, from the Highlands to the Borders,MUCH friendlier to them than the South of England. In fact the North of England is also very friendly.

Taxa,if you ever came here, you would find it a beautiful country with a good and friendly people, both with flaws but a good country nonetheless.Just like America.

Scotland of course like any nation has its idiots and bigots, but to suggest we are some bigoted hellhole is nonsense...

And remember most Americans memory of the UK is London.A beautiful but rude city which DOES have a large strain of anti-americanism.Taxa,most of Britain likes the US,dont be fooled by the very vocal anti-american minority...

I hope sincerely that one day you come to Scotland and Britain and you will find us far from the Muslim-loving,ungrateful,anti-american,bigoted race you are convinced we are.

All the best.

When the Brits become a Muslim nation they’ll look back at this time in history and wish they hadn’t been so retarded.

That assumes that these future Britons would be able to read a history free from Moslem revision.

Blair was one of the best Prime Ministers England has every had but people on here had no appreciation

You really don't know anything about Blair's policies do you? How anyone could say he's been one of the best PMs I have no idea. 'New' Labour did a number on Britain. And Brown probably isn't going to make it much better. No matter, if the Conservatives win here shortly, Brown won't be there that long

First of all, the most important thing is to get a handle on the War on Terror which Blair was our ally. Brown is already stumbling on it. We need Blair to stay as long as possible which of course he won’t because people are stupid in England as they are in America and continually bash a good man. Oh well no sweat off my back. You get what you get. I really think there were two Prime Ministers better than Blair and that was Thatcher and Churchill.

First of all the most important thing to do is get your sh#t straight at home. Blair's not doing that and frankly he's never done that. Secondly what you're advocating is much like if we all supported Bush no matter how much his domestic policies screwed us over. Oh wait.....

We need Blair to stay as long as possible which of course he won’t because people are stupid in England as they are in America and continually bash a good man

I think you need to look at his domestic policies before you claim he's a 'good' man. Frankly I wouldn't be half suprised if he's not eventually charged for cash for honors (although he won't be). Also (as has been pointed out to you) it's Britain, not just England. England is only part of the union. Tony's done the whole union over not just England.

I really think there were two Prime Ministers better than Blair and that was Thatcher and Churchill.

Here's a test for you. Name four PMs other than Thatcher and Churchill. Just because that's the only two other names you know doesn't mean there weren't much better men than Blair occupying that office.

Gosh where to begin. First of all you are saying one thing and then saying another. I don’t even know where you stand on Blair. Are you saying that he is better than Chruchill and Thatcher which you are correct are the best known and only ones I know. Second domestic issues in England are not a concern of mine so of course I would say Blair is doing an outstanding job as Prime Minister when I see him constantly on TV sticking up for America and the War on Terror. No I don’t see him on TV raising taxes or worrying about roads and services. I don’t think you have either if you were honest. Anyway, I made one comment that I think that Blair is a good man just the same as I think Lieberman is a good man for sticking with the WAR ON TERRORISM. Lieberman and Blair could be the same on social issues, but I am not discussing that at this time.

Oh well that's good then. After all running a country always comes second to make a few decisions on an endless war right?

No I don’t see him on TV raising taxes or worrying about roads and services.

Don't read much of the papers overseas do you? You should. Then you would know about the entire persona of someone you think is 'great'

I don’t think you have either if you were honest.

Actually I do. I catch at least This Week in Parliament on podcast, and the national newscast 2-3 times a week (no not the World Service one)

Anyway, I made one comment that I think that Blair is a good man just the same as I think Lieberman is a good man for sticking with the WAR ON TERRORISM

That's like saying Mussolini is a good man because he made the trains run on time. You can't judge a person's quality by one aspect.

The only thing we can do is just wait and see. Spectulation is only speculation until an actual outcome comes of it. So who knows what will happen, but have lived without England's help before we can do it again if we have to. Want more on this subject? Read what Christopher Ruddy has to say.

Bill, what was so ‘pathetic’ about British operations in 1982?.

Just curious.

Damn, guys, at some points I have to wonder : is the purpose of the thread was to offend and insult every patriotic Briton and make sure that old and great nation thinks twice about present and future alliances with the United States ?

Good Lord, the British government has supported the US through thick and thin on Iraq, even against its own public opinion, and British troops are deployed side by side with Amrican ones. You’d think that would earn Great Britain a few tokens of respect !
