Pelosi: Young people 'weary of war' are hope for peace

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Saturday that young people around the world are "weary of war" and hold the greatest hope of forging peace through dialogue.

Pelosi addressed about 250 graduates of the University of San Francisco's McLaren College of Business in her home district, where she was introduced to thunderous applause from students and their families.

Without directly mentioning President Bush or the impasse with Democrats over an Iraq war spending bill, the Pelosi criticized "some world leaders" who question the value of "constructive dialogue."

"The young people I have met on my travels are weary of war," Pelosi said during the commencement speech at St. Ignatius Church in San Francisco.

Using the latest technological tools, from blogs to instant messaging, she said, young people are reaching out across borders to forge understanding through communication.

"Words, not weapons, are the tools of the new civilization," Pelosi said.

The Democratic House leader has faced harsh criticism from the White House for her own effort to create dialogue by meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus last month. The Bush administration has largely shunned Syria, calling the country a sponsor of terrorism.

On Friday, negotiations between congressional Democrats and Bush administration officials on funding for the war quickly derailed over disagreement on a timetable for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq.

But Pelosi was in politically friendly territory at Saturday's ceremony.

Pelosi didn't bring up the issue of immigration during her address. But speaking to reporters afterward, she said she was "not pleased" with the immigration agreement reached by a bipartisan group of senators Thursday.

Under the proposal, spouses and minor children of legal residents and citizens could still get green cards, but other relatives would have to qualify under a point system that rewards advanced skills and education.

"A point system for unification undermines our family values that we espouse in our country," said Pelosi. "I don't know why we have to make a compromise on reunification of families. I really don't."

Yeah, we could have peace with Bin Laden, if only he had instant messaging.

Weary?

The only young people “weary” of war, are the pampered, liberal, unwashed neo-hippies on college campuses.

Our brave young men and women fighting the war aren’t weary. They are hardened and determined.

Anyway, since Peloser is speaking about the world’s youth being so peace loving... I think a whole mass of young Muslims would disagree.

Dear Nancy,
It doesn’t make any difference if someone is pounding on the table with their shoe or if they are text messaging,”We will bury you!”, they still are the SAME THREAT.

Our young people are more weary of shopping than of war. Most of them have no idea what a war is. Some day they will if they listen to Pelosi.

"Words, not weapons, are the tools of the new civilization,..."

However, when the old civilization uses weapons against the new civilization and the new civilization does not revert to weapons, the new civilization will lose.

"Mr. Terrorist, you don't have to do that. You need to understand that there are several options in this matter...". SLICE! (Sound of head bouncing on floor and body slumping to floor.)

“Weary?

They are going to get a lot more weary, because peace isn’t gonna happen anytime soon. They are just going to have to suck it up.

If terrorists were civilized we wouldn't be in Iraq and Afghanistan fighting them in the first place. Wake up Pelosi before we're fighting for our lives here in America on our own streets.

Let me be the first to suggest that "the new civilization" referenced will not last long enough to become an old civilization.
