Senator Byron Dorgan says he`ll try to kill a temporary worker program that`s part of an immigration overhaul announced by President Bush and other lawmakers.

It also would create a temporary worker program for new arrivals and a different program to cover farm workers. Dorgan says he`ll try to kill the temporary worker program because it would bring in a potentially unlimited stream of immigrants to compete with Americans for jobs and depress wages.

What if the criminal aliens, crooks, terrorists and narco-gangsters don’t want amnesty? Why should they? Wouldn’t they have to pay taxes? How can you force criminals to become citizens? Why would you? If these people really wanted to be real citizens they wouldn’t use phony ID’s.

Good move on Dorgon’s part, even if he did give some of the traditional Democrat protectionist reasons for voting against this.

ND should be proud.

“traditional Democrat protectionist reasons”

It’s a traditional Republican reason too.

I hear more Republicans say it than Democrats.

Sounds like Dorgan has no problem with the amnesty part of it.

Yeah....but Bush is not going to sign any immigration reform package without his precious “Guest Worker Program.”

I am all for a structured for farm workers only “F” visa for Farmworker.

They could be issued a 6 to 9 month farm worker visa and then return to Mexico for the Winter.

The problem farmers are having is that those illegals who used to pick the fruit are leaving the fields to take jobs in the meat packing and other industries.

Jobs that many Americans will do if given enough salary to support their families.

I bet his overflowing voice mail box and overworked fax machine might have helped him to take this stance.

Hard to believe I’d ever support Dorgan but on this one he’s right.

I’m totally willing to give voice mailboxes and fax machines the credit for helping a democrat find his brain.

I think they can add Nelson, Webb and Byrd to the list of democrat senators in opposition. I don’t know if it will be enough to reach 41. There are many congressional democrats in opposition as well.

Guest workers have worked out so well in Germany, haven’t they? The last thing this country needs is a group of several million people who are explicitly second-class citizens with little or no hope of improvement.

While throwing them all out sounds like the correct thing, this implies the same government that brings us Iraq, the DMV, FEMA, the Post Office, etc., can manage this correctly.

There would be the risks of the PR disaster of that Elian picture being repeated 10,000-fold, and the risk that a sizeable number of illegals will want to stay and wreak havoc. Would the founding of an IRA-style group that periodically bombs LA/San Diego/Phoenix/El Paso/San Antonio be so far-fetched? It’s not THAT far-fetched. All you need are a few hundred militants, and a few thousand people willing to cover for them. That’s all it took in Northern Ireland, 1969-1999.

No, like it or not, the current group of illegals are here. We can do our best to weed out the ones that aren’t even working and exist only to suck on the government teat, or even worse are criminals. Of course — do we add them to our already-overcrowded prisons, or deport them to their home country so they can try and show up here again?

Fortifying the border seems like a no-brainer. If we are to have a number of laws, we may as well try and

Eliminating citizenship by birth is doable as well. But this should be done by amending the Constitution.

We are fortunate in two things: (1) the Mexicans and Latin Americans appear, by and large, willing to work. Granted, at this point, the taxes they do pay (if any) are not enough to cover the costs of the services they consume. (2) They share a common religion with us — Christianity. The North African immigrants to Europe appear unwilling to work and appear radically opposed to the culture they are living in (i.e. they are Muslim and as they face troubles, they cling ever more tightly to their religion.)

This assumes they will actually go home for the winter. Do you think they will actually do this?

I'm in favor of a 1.5million guest worker program for agriculture and food processing and slaughterhouses. Other than that no amnesty, use employer sanctions and build a fence

"Hard to believe"

Dorgan is opposed to guest workers/temporary visas because he wants them to come in with permanent visas/greencards.
