LOS ANGELES, May 17 (Xinhua) -- About 2,000 people returned to a downtown Los Angeles park Thursday evening to continue a May Dayrally that was interrupted by police, just hours after federal lawmakers announced a new compromised immigration bill in Washington.
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa led a 10-block procession to MacArthur Park, where demonstration organizers held a candlelight vigil during the festive gathering.
"One Los Angeles marched together in peace to stand up for the idea that in a great and generous America, we have every right to march peaceably, to speak out against the government, to ask to be a part of the American dream," the mayor said while standing alongside police chief William Bratton.
Demonstrators, journalists and police officers were injured at the end of a march supporting the rights of illegal immigrants in the same park on May 1, when police tried to disperse some people who moved off the sidewalk into the street, police said.
After bottles were thrown at police patrolling the park, officers clad in riot gear responded by wielding batons and firing 146 rounds of foam-rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
The conflict later became a public relation headache for LAPD as demonstrators and journalists injured during the incident filed complaints, prompting investigations by the Los Angeles Police Commission and the FBI.
Thursday's demonstration, mostly participated by Latinos, was held the same day that an agreement on a bipartisan Senate bill between key senators and the White House was announced.
The bill would allow illegal immigrants to live legally in the United States, after paying a 5,000-dollar fine, and to receive temporary-resident permits while they apply for a "Z" visa.
Heads of illegal-immigrant households would have eight to 13 years to return to their home countries and apply for permanent legal residence for family members.
The proposal also shifted the emphasis from family unification to a merit-based system that would award points to illegal immigrants based on education level, work experience, English proficiency and family ties.
Pro-immigration groups said the bill does not go far enough, while those against illegal immigration said it goes too far.
Criticism against the bill from both sides suggested that Capitol Hill's latest push on the lingering immigration reform issue, although representing a potential breakthrough, could again end in a stalemate.
Oct..2006..World Vision Outreach..FYI..
"In the dust-choked streets just south of the United States' border with Mexico, thousands live in plywood and cinder-block shacks with no electricity, running water or sewer. During the day, the relentless sun bakes the ground, intensifying the putrid odor of trash and human waste.
"It can, and will, make you nauseous," said the Rev. Chris Peltz, youth pastor at Huron Hills Baptist Church in Ann Arbor, Michigan. "The combination of trash, raw sewage, animals and the extreme heat will take your breath away."
Yet, for the past three years, teams from Huron Hills Baptist have enthusiastically returned to spend weeks with the people of this area who struggle to survive in the midst of dire and chronic poverty.
Among the impoverished residents being served by Huron Hills' members is 40-year-old Albina, who was abandoned by her husband and now raises her six children in a tattered one-room house. Albina's experience is common in the three communities of El Ranchito, San Luis, and Pedregal de Santa Julia.
In an area defined by want, many children are undernourished, jobs are scarce, and education is substandard. Because of this, children often grow up without the resources they need to realize the fullness of life God intends for each person and the cycle of poverty continues from generation to generation.

I prefer KFC, but, aw, what the heck : )
Me too! THAT made me hungry for fried chicken. Yum, Yum!
Perhaps I should have stated “Major City” or “Medium Sized City” or “Small City” and specified that I did not mean tiny villages on the frontier of Mexico.
However, while the conditions described in you post are horrid they are quite similar to living conditions of some towns and villages in Starr County, Texas where people have no running water, sewage treatment or cable TV. Some if they are lucky may have electricity. And, yes, that is right here in the USA!
I was miserably trying to make my point, that the poorest of poor who migrate here from the small towns in Mexico, Honduras and Guatamale, consider living in the US a luxury, even if they are stuffed 15 to a house, as long as they have modern conveniences.

Yuck. I’m glad my parents left Los Angeles. I was born there but we moved when I was 2. Maryland’s not much better, but at least there are no rioting illegal immigrants on ground that’s due for a 7.0+ earthquake.
And the other 9 million people watched in disgust as illegal alien invaders and the Mayor of Los Angeles continued their actions toward destruction of the nation.
Funny how a native American can call me a racist after she refers to hispanics as disease ridden and criminal-then turn it around and call me racist?wtf!first of all you have no right to call any race names when YOUR race is so screwed up!Native AMericans are the only race of people born with alcoholism running thru their veins-and you wanna make judgements on another race?please-your PEOPLE cant get off the dole-and then get the assisstance goverment gives them and drinks it away-now you arent going to be another one of those people wo denies the obvious or statistically provable are you?NATIVES are right alongside blacks in criminal behaviour -disease -illeteracy-poverty and not to mention there problems with fire water-Yes all are not like that -but -thing is majoritys of natives are -and thats not racist!its a proven fact backed by long research-In Alcoholics Anonymous-factors given for dependency are -prior family alcoholism and Native American background-and thats not a lie-so before I start calling people-criminal and disease ridden Id really consider WHERE my own race lies!Hispanics are contributing to this country immeasureably-cant say the same for Natives though-oh yea except for them slot machines-we know what a bessing those are.
Dear Republican Leaders:
Look at California.
Seriously. Look.
It’s what America will look like, 5 years after this stupid “compromise”.
What role, do you see today for Republicans in California???
Why not deport the illegals in the crowd, who so brazenly disrespect our laws?
Are you speaking of Hispanic Americans or illegals as major contributors to America?
