Drama over a proposal to require voters to prove their identity dominated the Texas Senate for a second straight day Wednesday.
The debates brought work to a halt as lawmakers huddled for hours behind closed doors.
Senate Democrats barely blocked consideration of the bill Tuesday and feared Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst might invoke a rarely used rule to push the measure through.
The bill is a top priority for Republicans. Getting it passed could help Dewhurst score points with conservatives before the 2010 gubernatorial election.
At the end of the day, Dewhurst conceded that he was running out of time to get the measure to the governor's desk. He said he is still evaluating his options, which could include adding the proposal to another piece of legislation.
Democrats grew frustrated when Dewhurst issued a scorching statement saying their actions to block the bill were "an outrage against all Americans."
Dewhurst later issued a second, less strident version of the statement and insisted the other one was released without his approval.
The bill would require voters to produce photo identification or two other forms of non-photo identification at a polling place.
Opponents of the voter ID bill have said it would disenfranchise thousands of Texans who do not have identification, especially those who are poor, minorities, elderly, students and disabled. But supporters say the stricter rules are needed to combat voter fraud.
OH - wait - disenfranchising multiple voters and dead voters who have the Constitutional right to vote....errr...uhh... nevermind.

Truth is, Republicans don't need to cheat, THEY JUST NEED TO GET OFF THEIR DEAD ARSES AND VOTE.
Indiana instituted a photo ID requirement last year.
The usual suspects (NAACP, ACLU/ICLU, etc.) put up a hissy fit, but were unable to provide a single case where a legitimate voter was unfairly denied their voting rights.
Gee, in my little Texas city (A DFW suburb) you show up with your voter registration card or driver’s license or they send you home to get them. No if, ands, or buts from the little old ladies running the voting.
Is quite obvious, this being Texas, exactly what Democrats have to gain/lose, dependent upon whether or not ID is required. Not the deceased, Chicago Democrats have the patent on that. Can anyone say undocumented workers/voters/invaders?

God bless those little old ladies - the very foundation of the election process. Unfortunately, in my ward (suburb of Milwaukee) you give your address and then the ladies say, “are you _____?” I could probably go home, change clothes, and come back 15 min. later and vote as my neighbors.
I have never seen a poll worker under 70. And dang, they are ON TOP of it! My poll ladies don’t let anybody get away with anything.
