Korea to Launch New Attack Sub

Korea is preparing to launch its second Type-214 attack submarine early next month. Named "Jung Ji", the 1,800-ton sub will be capable of carrying out undersea missions to the Philippines or to China's Hainan Island.

An official with the defense acquisition agency said on Tuesday that the new sub will go through a year-long testing phase before it is delivered to the Navy in November 2008.

The submarine was named after General Jung Ji (1347-1391) who fought off Japanese invaders during the Goryeo Dynasty. It can carry out underwater operations for up to three weeks without having to surface.

The W350 billion (US$1=W924) "Jung Ji" was developed by Hyundai Heavy Industries and Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH, a German defense contractor that also made the Navy's older Type-209 subs.

The new diesel-electric sub is considered among the best in its class. At 65.3 meters long and 6.3 meters wide, it can accommodate a crew of 40.

Korea's first Type-214 sub, the "Sohn Won-yil", will be delivered to the Navy in November after completing on-going tests since last June.

The "Sohn Won-yil" is named for a lieutenant commander who rose to become the founder of Korea's modern Navy. Sohn was later the Navy's first commanding officer and a defense minister.

The Navy plans to operate nine Type-214 subs by 2018.

Bad news for Chicom. It can patrol all of China's coastal waters.

Re #2

Give it to me. I will deduct a hefty processing fee and send the rest to shipyard crews for a week supply of vending machine coffee.:-)
