It isn’t possible to say if it was a mistake because we can’t see other outcomes. Was it a mistake to fight Germany to save the USSR? I think so. Nazism could only ever appeal to a small group of people, Germans. Communism appeals globally and is a real threat, even to this very day. We helped the greater evil defeat the lesser when we should have waited to defeat whichever one of them was victorious (if we really wanted to fight).
