Iranians want to talk to U.S. Congress

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) A group of Iranian lawmakers wants to create a "friendship committee" that would open contacts with the U.S. Congress - an unprecedented attempt to build ties at a time when Iran's hard-line leadership also appears willing to talk with the country's No. 1 enemy.

Proponents hope the effort, for which they were gathering petition signatures Tuesday, will be condoned by Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has final say in national matters.

Contacts between the countries have long been taboo, a status enforced by Iran's top leadership - made up of Shiite clerics - since the U.S. cut ties with Iran after the 1979 seizure of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran.

More recently, as tension between the two countries over Iran's nuclear program and other issues has escalated, the dialogue situation has also shifted. Over the weekend, the two governments agreed to hold ambassador-level talks about Iran's war-torn neighbor, Iraq.

A so-called "friendship committee" would open a unique channel of communication between politicians, who presumably could tackle any topic.

"If (Iranian) government officials can reconcile with Americans, why can't the Iranian nation reconcile with the American people?" asked Jalal Hosseini, a pro-reform lawmaker who signed the petition.

So far, proponents have gathered 20 signatures and plan to seek more at the 290-seat parliament. Backers come from across Iran's political spectrum.

Our enemies want to suck up to Liberals who are clueless about who are enemies are. Kind of like the box in the hen house.

I’m all for it if we can send a congressional delegation there as permanent residents: Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and John Murtha. And I think they need an official propagandist, er videographer, like Michael Moore.

Why not move Reid, Pelosi and Murtha to the State Dept. and hire replacements for them?

On a more serious note, it just goes to show that the news media is dumb enough to think this could even fly. Do they even study the Constitution before they become media types? The President conducts foreign policy, not Congress and it’s my bet that the Iranians know that probably moreso than our own citizens. They’d love to split us even more than we are now, it would be to their benefit.

A ploy aimed at dealing directly with the legislative branch and shunting aside the executive, not to mention the governing polity established under the U. S. Constitution. Expect the Drive-bys and Dem leadership to give this serious consideration.

Even our enemies know that the morons in congress are defeatists and they can convince them to surrender before the war this time, thus saving time and money on their end. Imagine it’s like winning a war without bothering to show up.

Amen to all that you said. According to Roger Hedgecock, the morons in Congress have a lower approval rating than GWB. The MSM fails to report that small detail. Pelosi, Reid, Murtha, and the rest of the traitorous fools think they’re “royalty” and immune to being voted out of office. As Rush says, Liberals think it’s their birth right. If the American people don’t “clean house,” ASAP, the future of our children and grandchildren is in peril. If the GOP leadership doesn’t find their gonads, the Party is in peril. Times are precarious at best, IMO.

“The President conducts foreign policy, not Congress”

Tell that to Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.

Her little ‘jaunt’ across the pond should have been met with charges of ‘sedition’, if not ‘treason’.

Alimenutjob knows what he’s doing, and who he’s directing it towards.

After all, the dems are their ally.

Terrorist want to meet the Democrats. It’s a match made in heaven. They will both agree it’s Bush’s fault.
