She may have a son in the service but has she ever been very young and by herself for the first time? Maybe with a baby or two? Has she ever been completely responsible for too many bills and not enough money, fixing the car, going thru a hurricane or earthquake for the first time alone, staying up all night because of strange noises...that kind of stuff. My youngest DIL did not even know how to drive. She did fine but there were lots of calls and fears that she couldn’t worry my son about and had to handle herself.
