Military wives' whining wears on Dr. Laura
Contra Costa Times/Salt Lake Tribune ^ | 5/13/2007 | Matthew D. LaPlante

SALT LAKE CITY -- Radio relationship guru Laura Schlessinger, in Salt Lake City on Friday to speak to Army families at Fort Douglas, said she was tired of hearing the complaints of lonely and overwhelmed military wives whose husbands are deployed. "He could come back without arms, legs or eyeballs, and you're (whining)?" Schlessinger asked before taking the stage at the base theater to host her daily program on ethics, morals and values. "You're not dodging bullets, so I don't want to hear any whining -- that's my message to them."

Schlessinger boasted that she once talked a young woman out of marrying a soldier, noting that "warriors need warrior wives" and that she felt the woman was unprepared.

So what, I wasn’t addressing you. A question was raised and I answered it.

The point is it does not matter how much education Dr. Phil has. He makes money for himself but I don’t find him to be worth the any time. Dr. Phil and his friend Oprah are not good for America.

No, the point is, someone said Dr. Phil was a fake doctor and I corrected the record.

"In other words, with all due respect Dr. Laura, please shut your trap when "confronting" these ladies. They have enough to worry about."

With all due respect, Clemenza, you aren't doing these fighting men any favors by telling Dr. Laura to "shut up".

I was the daughter of a career Military Officer, who was rarely home. My Mother kept a lot of her problems from him, so he didn't have to worry..

Then, I married "one", and repeated the same pattern with my own husband and children.

When these men are off on a mission and/or fighting a war, they don't need a whining, bitchy wife who does nothing but complain. They have a job to do, which is tough enough.

I've seen way too many men whose wives forced them out of the military, or worse yet, divorced them because they couldn't "cope".

Laura is right. It takes a special woman to hold down the fort while their man is away. God Bless them all..

Rant off...sw

How is she a fraud?

Schlessinger bragged all the time about her alleged "religious commitment" to Judaism, and then admitted that she did not bother to keep Sabbath or eat kosher food when it became "inconvenient" for her--and she blamed her own laziness of observance on Jewish liberals who were always criticizing her.

Yes, that I would go along with. I had in the back of my mind the perennial Democrat idea of everyone doing two years of “universal service.”

Certainly no harm in everyone getting weapons training, obedience training, and other basic preparations for fighting. The Swiss have something like that. Everyone in the country has a gun and the knowledge to use it, which has in the past helped them discourage invaders.

Being married to the same man for almost 49 years, I can attest to the hard work it takes to just be civil to each other from day to day.

Wow 49 years ! now that is dedication and I hope from your above statement at least some love. :)

“My son is deployed. My DIL of course is worried but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t get sad, lonely and maybe a little scared too. I don’t call it whining.”

Sounds like she might be lucky to have you as her MIL. God’s blessing on all of you and may He bring your son home safely.

Tall_Texan, I believe you got what the jist of what Dr. Laura was trying to convey.

Speaking as a Military spouse, I know the best way we can support our soldiers is to NOT complain when they are overseas; but to bear up, suck it up, whatever you want to call it; and let our guys know that we are proud of them and will take care of the home front and let them do their job without having to worry about us.

My husband has stage IV cancer. Our days together are numbered barring a real miracle. My life will be over, as I can’t imagine it without him.

“Right about that...”

Undeniably the most cogent thing I’ve read on FR in a very long time. You could not have more accurately summed up my thoughts.

No lack of ego in this woman, is there?

There was only one reason for me to listen to her, that's when I wanted to hear someone else get chewed out by a master scold. Some days, you need to feel someone else's life is more in the toilet than your own...

The military life is not easy, I lived in Jacksonville, NC for years... and saw a lot of things.

Most married relatively young.

A deployment even in peace time when the family is left behind can put massive strain on a relationship.

Various couples dealt with things in various ways, morality of their individual decisions ran the gammit.

There are pleanty of military families who have broken up in peace and war times.

I agree it takes a different kind of woman to be a military wife, just as it takes a special kind of guy to be a career military man.

Its a very very bad idea if you are in the military to marry a high maintenance woman or a woman who must be the center of attention, or the need for constant validation.... Unless you view your relationship in a nontraditional way, the likelihood of you two making it long term is next to nill.

Well if its a once in a while thing yes, its not whining, but if its a constant it is. I would not expect anyone in that situation to never ever say anything especially around other women in the same boat. But if that’s the conversation most of the time, it is time to stop whining.
