Substitute Teacher Sued for Showing 'Brokeback Mountain' in Class

CHICAGO A girl and her grandparents have sued the Chicago Board of Education, alleging that a substitute teacher showed the R-rated film "Brokeback Mountain" in class.
The lawsuit claims that Jessica Turner, 12, suffered psychological distress after viewing the movie in her 8th grade class at Ashburn Community Elementary School last year.
The film, which won three Oscars, depicts two cowboys who conceal their homosexual affair.
Turner and her grandparents, Kenneth and LaVerne Richardson, are seeking around $500,000 in damages.
"It is very important to me that my children not be exposed to this," said Kenneth Richardson, Turner's guardian. "The teacher knew she was not supposed to do this."
According to the lawsuit filed Friday in Cook County Circuit Court, the video was shown without permission from the students' parents and guardians.
The lawsuit also names Ashburn Principal Jewel Diaz and a substitute teacher, referred to as "Ms. Buford."
The substitute asked a student to shut the classroom door at the West Side school, saying: "What happens in Ms. Buford's class stays in Ms. Buford's class," according to the lawsuit.
Richardson said his granddaughter was traumatized by the movie and had to undergo psychological treatment and counseling.
In 2005, Richardson complained to school administrators about reading material that he said included curse words.
"This was the last straw," he said. "I feel the lawsuit was necessary because of the warning I had already given them on the literature they were giving out to children to read. I told them it was against our faith."

I disagree about suing - it is taxpayers that always wind up paying these settlements. The people in charge should lose their jobs, though.
Go for it!!!!
Oh yeah, the homosexual cowboy film. What’s the matter with that school, thinking twelve is too young to be indoctrinated with pro-homosexual propoganda? Bet the ACLU is on this one.
However, could she have done anything more stupid than show an R rated movie to a bunch of 12 year olds?
Every adult person associated with this story is utterly ridiculous.
Could this be how teacher/student relationships begin? Is this a predator behavior? Now the boys know that "Ms. Buford" will show them "dirty movies." How is that different than an adult enticing a child with coming over to play with a Playstation?

These arrogant elitist only understand lawsuits.
The taxpayers when asked to fork over the money just might get their head out of their a-holes and correct the problem of out of control liberalism in the government school system
Bingo! And they will keep pushing their destructive lies forever. They will only be limited by how consistently and energetically we push back.
No. It was 3 hours without teaching.
So I guess that’s what teacher meant by bringing fudge to class.
Go for it!
It’s Mother’s Day, so do it for Lot’s wife!
While I’m not in favor of lawsuits generally, they seem to be the only tool that has any effect on public “educators”.
“I disagree about suing -”....
I couldn’t disagree with you more. Lawsuits are precisely the mechanism created by this nation to remedy such ills.
It is the weapon used by enemies of our constitutional republic, leftists, envornmental-religious zealots and msot every anti-traditonal values organization that exists.
Either we fight back with effective weapons or we sit around moaning and groaning on internet message baords about how this country is going to hell in a hand basket and it is all the fault of the liberals but if we re-elect Bush he has a double secret plan to destroy the Dem party and reduce government spending and we should all take consolation that conservative talk radio is angry and will cause a revolution by people whorun around patting each other on the back saying mindlessly “you’re a great American..no, you’re a great American..no, you’re...”
While namby pamby Christian conservatives refuse to get involved in politics for fear of being called names, the anti-Christians have taken full control over the legislative process. While naive, pansy Christian conservatives think all they need to do to change the direction of this country is simply vote for a Republican (they don’t have a choice which Rep) the enemy (yes enemy) are filing lawsuits by the hundreds to enforce their values through the courts and side stepping the political process for expediency.
So my “enemies” now have control over the political process AND are on the major offensive with lawsuits (which are perfectly LEGAL)...Christians whine.
And YOU are afraid of paying the costs of some lawsuit that may help stop the proces of homosexual indoctrination of ourchildren??
Is money that important to you?? If so then money is more of a God to you than even the secular humanist materialisits who are spending billions upon billions to file lawsuits against traditional American culture and society.
Christians are radicals (used to be). Jesus Christ was a political, philosophical and spiritual revolutionary. He changed the face of the world, not just politics.
Christians created the first free nation on earth, and every other democratic nation that exists today owes its liberty to American Christians.
Slavery was ended not by Muslims, Buddhists, atheists, Hindi or anybody else but by Christians who got involved in a forceful way in politics. The Baptists of Jamaica armed themselves and marched on the capital in 1832 forcing an end to slavery 30 years before the US Civil War (they didnt need to fire a shot).
Martin Luther King, another Baptist bible-thumper, did not tell people to vote strategically for the lesser of 2 evil politicians, he organized massive civil rights campaigns to change the course of US politics.
Most Christians today are pathetic wimps who do no have the convictionof their own beliefs, allowing themselves to be intimidated by name calling by hippie atheists who freak out when a Bible enters their line of sight (like sunlight to dracula).
Simply call a Christian a right-wing zealot, or a fascist, and he will instantly roll over vote for the multicultural-liberal-with-short-back-and-sides-haircut-who -must-be-a-nice-guy-and-we-must-respect-all-religions-by-giving-them-control-
-over-our-government-and-impose-their-values-over-our children-because-our-values-are-not-necessarily-the-best values...”
I’ll say it. I want our government to reflect ONLY Judeo-Christian values. (”values” not establish a state religion). It was those values that gave us our liberties in the first place. No other religion allows such liberty.
(off my soapbox now...this wasn’t all aimed at you. peace)
Showing any R rated films to children under 18 is not acceptable. Every teacher knows that. There is really no excuse for the teacher in question. Substitute teachers, sometimes without lesson plans, look for anything to cover their time in classes. And, if the film is available and the teacher can feel intellectually bold and daring by showing it, well, you see here what can happen.
I'm just not sure how the school is liable - maybe someone else can point it out, I don't see it.
They are saying the principal knew about it and allowed it. Since she represents the school as the administration that makes the school system liable, in my opinion.
