Black America's first serious contender to become the leader of the free world just racked up one more first: Ten days ago, Sen. Barack Obama was assigned to the watchful eye of the U.S. Secret Service, concealed automatic weapons and all. The politic explanation for his getting this 24/7 team of bodyguards so early has much to do about the rock-star crowds he draws. The real explanation, unspoken but readily understood, is deeply rooted in those two great American social disorder diseases: racism and murder.
Obama's Secret Service detail comes nine months before the first presidential primary vote is cast and 20 months before the inaugural ceremony kicks off. Sen. Hillary Clinton's detail was on the job before she announced her candidacy, grandfathered in because of husband Bill. None of the other 16 presidential hopefuls, Repubs or Dems, have crossed that invisible line into harm's way. As of now, they're protected by the wizardry of their white maleness with neither their gender nor skin color magnetic enough for the manic-minded, soul-soiled, red-blooded American haters to find them worthy of killing for sport.
Obama is not the first first black leader from Chicago in need of official protection from rabid racism. In 1983, there was presidential candidate Jesse L. Jackson, and the year before him, there was Harold Washington. Chicago's first black mayor may as well have been running for national office, Howard Saffold, who served as Washington's chief of security, reminded me in a telephone interview. The death threats came fast and furiously. They came by telephone. They came through letters. The death threats also came by word-of-mouth -- from Chicago's finest down to its dregs. One Chicago police officer, following roll call, was heard loudly complaining that ''somebody ought to kill that bastard.'' Police brutality surged on the street with uniformed cops spewing, ''Why don't you go tell the black mayor about this?''
The death threats flourished because the status quo was threatened. Chicago's first black mayor set out to curtail white privilege, settling rather than challenging discrimination suits, rooting out police corruption and brutality, replacing the business-as-usual practices by opening up the city's budget process, opening up bids on city contracts to minority businesses and opening up city hiring opportunities for nonwhites in general and blacks in particular.
''The first black mayor caused a lot of things to happen for the first time,'' Saffold said. The Chicago Police Department working against the mayor of Chicago was just one of those things. But the question of loyalty forced the mayor's chief of security to take a number of unprecedented steps. Saffold arranged to have his entire security detail trained by the U.S. Secret Service. He petitioned CPD brass to let him have his own investigators check out the death threats. He procured his own specialist to do the debugging of the mayor's office.
Twenty-five years later, just as Harold threatened the status quo, so does Obama. The first black commander in chief would undermine the underpinnings of white supremacy. The first African American elected the most powerful man on Earth would belie the myth of white superiority. The first black president would have the wherewithal to level the playing field for real. There are more Americans than can be counted who would hate to see that happen.
So, for Obama, Secret Service protection is not a luxury but a necessity. The special agents know the prey of the land. They are all too familiar with the threat level of the KKK, the neo-Nazis, the skinheads and others burrowed deep in the nation's hateful screw holes. Of course, the Secret Service isn't a magic shield. Both John and Bobby Kennedy were assassinated on its watch. It can discourage amateurs and make the professional's challenge more difficult but it can't guarantee a worry-free campaign.
''If you have to worry about whether you're safe or not can really have an impact on what you're trying to do,'' Saffold said.
That may yet end up being the booby prize for the bigots: That which doesn't kill Obama could make him weaker.

The Secret Service intercepted two letters from Hillary Clinton, one to John Hinckley, asking Hinckley if he knew Obama was trying to date Jodie Foster and the other to LadyBird Johnson asking if she could borrow LBJ’s old Italian hunting rifle.
