Let me throw something in here from the world of biofuels (I edit a trade magazine for ag folks)---

Back biodiesel however you can. I'm not saying that because my guys will benefit, I'm saying it because ethanol's goping to go nowhere and you can make almost anything with a lot of carbon into biodiesel. Theres a chemist in Germany who's been running his car on diesel made from dead cats (obtained from a veterinary crematorium) for well over 100,000 miles now.

Can 10% ethanol in 90% biodiesel (or some such mix) be used for an efficient cold-weather fuel?

It would be nice to know that money spent at the pump goes to make some conservative American farmers in Iowa rich, rather than terrorist-supporting middle east royalty.

Remembering, the diesel engine was originally invented, to run on vegetable oil...

According to the EPA, there are only two 2007 cars that get over 45 MPG under any circumstances.

More "Freedom for me, but none for thee" from the stars of the Dem party.

That is their attitude about just about anything. No rules or standards or laws for the ruling class but they want to control every detail of your life.

SandRat, for the most part, my race is about over. But if necessary I will die on my feet rather than live on my knees. Except when I am ptaying. Long ago I made up my mind that I will never be in one of Hillary’s concentration camps where she can walk around and gloat.

As far as I am concerned, there are things more important than life.

let’s stop criticising Detroit because they have been following
CAFE standards since 1974. Conservation will not increase productivity or fuel sources. For three decades we’ve been subjected to government dictates on efficiency with abissmal
results. The automobile is the target of all liberal hatred of freedom but the car has little real impact on conservation.

The truth is only 25% of crude is used to make fuel for cars.
The rest is used to make plastics to fertilizers. Crude is
the most versatile and cheapest of raw materials.

IMO most of the hysteria over mileage has turned American against American. The guy who boasts of his Toyota getting 2 mpg more per gallon than the American model truly believes he
is on a religious mission to cure the oil shortage. In fact most car owners take a self -righteous attitude about their choices.

Heard on Forbes about a process to make electricity using the waste water from breweries and some special bacteria today.

Ethanol has to be trucked, or carried by barge, or by train, or otherwise carried where it needs to go; pipelines can't be used because the ethanol gets contaminated by water.

So, even if the mix you mentioned would be workable, moving the ethanol around would use up more fuel...and in the foresseable future, that fuell would be gas or petrodiesel. Also, a gallon of biodiesel has the energy release of 2.25 gallons of ethanol, so an ethanol mix would actually "water down" biodiesel.

Actually, we need to come up with a better name for biodiesel, because it's not just something you grow in a field. There's a guy at the University of Illinois who's made it from pig manure. The day could come when all our trash will be divided, and anything organic (from apple cores to paper) will go to a biodiesel plant.

I’m not criticizing Detroit...I was just saying that even if Detroit did suck as badly as he said, it wouldn’t change whether Obama is a hypocritical idiot.

We had a scientist at U of IL make diesel fuel out of pig manure last year. Anything over a certain percentage of carbon is fair game, and when we get economy of scale working the price may be competitive with petrodiesel.

Why can’t the trucks, barges or trains run on ethanol? Or biodiesel? Or electric? Solar?

They run on gas now.

We’re not far from alternatives. Mostly we’re stuck with thinking inside boxes we’re familiar with, IMHO.

“Bio diesel” in fact is just, at its simplest, vegetable oil.

Diesel engines can run on vegetable oil. The original design was invented to do, just that.

It was only the availability of (cheaper) petroleum diesel, which drove the market that direction.

The market will respond in kind, to $3.50/gallon gas.

If I’m not mistaken, it would already be cheaper for me to go buy vegetable oil at Ralph’s on Sunday for my car (if I owned a diesel car) than it is for me to buy gas at the filling station.

That should be an equilibrium point in the marketplace, beyond which things will start happening automatically.

If it’s cheaper to buy fuel at the grocery store (which it is now), things will change.

I just wish our own carmakers, were getting in front of that change.

It seems so obvious.

Some entepreneurs are going to become very, very rich soon by being first.

It looks like the context was in a country's MPG requirements. I'm guessing he was talking about cars made and driven in Japan....and he was wrong there, too.

I found this tidbit:

Green Car Congress has the story from the Nikkei on the new requirements on average fuel economy for the carmakers in Japan. By 2015, passenger cars need to have an average fuel economy of 39.5 mpg.

What kills me is, cars made in other countries, for driving in other countries, can't meet the USA's pollution control requirements, but Obama has the audacity to make an MPG comparison with said other countries.
