So am I.

And I think that the prayers and lives of true Christians will have more impact on this election than any other—and more critically.

Thanx

This is yet another thread that really makes me wonder why I ever believed that Christians really exemplify their namesake. You know, the more I see go on here at FR, the more I become convinced that what the Left accuses the Right of is true. I’ve been on this board for nearly 4 years (and lurked more years before that), but I’m growing tiresome of being offended day after day on threads like these for my personal beliefs in God—and yes, I’m LDS. Oh I can already anticipate the mocking responses I’m going to get for “playing the victim.” Here’s a tip...save yourselves the effort.

I’m yet undecided who I want to be the nominee for the Republican party, but one thing I know for sure—whoever that man may be (even McCain...::shudder::), I’ll throw my support behind him because I know what the scary liberal alternative will be if I do not. What is truly pathetic, though, is seeing some posters who would much rather not vote than vote for a Mormon. I’m unsure as to what is motivating this fear, however. Is it that they believe that a Mormon president would take direction from church headquarters? If so, I would suggest the following: take a good, hard look at two of the most prominent Mormons in the Senate—Orrin Hatch (former chairman of the Judiciary Committee) and (::shudder::) Harry Reid (current Senate Minority Leader). Both are on completely different ends of the polical spectrum, yet I challenge anyone here to find one example of where their religion has been used to further public policy. In fact, I daresay that Hatch and Reid have had more influence on public policy in their 25+ years in the Senate as lawmakers than a Mormon president ever would.

I’ve seen some other posts about how anyone who believes the tenets of the LDS religion must be insane and therefore too unstable to hold the highest office in America. Yeah, Romney must be insane—I guess that’s why his self-made wealth is estimated to be over $150 million. If that’s the case, I want a little of his insanity to rub off on me.

Somehow though, I have a gut feeling that people are fearful that voting for a Mormon means that their personally endorsing his religious beliefs. I guess they must have missed that whole separation of church and state lesson in school. As a Mormon, I don’t vote for someone based on whether they are Mormon, so why should you? I would have rather died than vote for Dingy Harry here in Nevada, even though he attends my same church, so I voted for the other guy who held my same political views.

So go right ahead and let religion be your litmus test. As I always like to say, Conservatives have always been their own worst enemy.

But you don’t seem to be . . . 100% thoroughly informed about your former LDS org and cohorts.

Garbage. I used to argue scriptures over Sunday dinner with Benson and I dated one of his granddaughters when I went to BYU. I have two Uncles who are 70's. I served a mission, married in the Temple and was asked to be a Bishop. There is nothing that I don't know about the Church or couldn't find out with a phone call.

There is no grand conspiracy, no cabal. If there was, I would probably join back up ^_^ The Church is boring, it's all about raising a good family and having lots of boring meetings.

You do sound more connected than I am. Been a long time since I was that close to anyone in any great know.

I agree it’s mostly boring. I don’t agree that there are no interesting secrets.

Susan, you are correct in your terminology. The term “Elder” in LDS nomenclature refers to one who holds the office of “Elder” in the priesthood. There are millions of such people all around the world; the minimum age for this office is 18.

We generally reserve the title “Elder” to the missionaries and a few of the leaders of the Church. So, we might call a Mormon missionary or a general church authority “Elder Smith.”

I’m glad that the LDS Church has had a positive effect in your son’s life.

“LDS folks have had plans in place to take over the government for decades if they felt the Democracy was about to fall.”

This is poppycock. It is a rumor based on a thoroughly discredited “prophecy” known as the “White Horse Prophecy.” It is untrue, unfounded, and particularly tenacious.

Hello again, LeGrande.

“If you want to be bored to death, go to a meeting, or better yet steal a Temple recommend and go to the Temple, then you will face true boredom, the kind of boredom that would drive Buddhist monks insane.”

I don’t know, I find them to be pretty interesting activities, particularly when I’m in need of spiritual nourishment. Of course, many consider spirituality itself a rather boring pursuit. To each his own, I suppose.

“...but just because he prays does not make him a leader to follow...”

That’s true, religious beliefs should not be a reason to vote either for or against a particular candidate. Plenty of people have found valid political reasons to question or support Romney as a candidate.

The President is supposed to be the most capable administrator, not the person who "looks and believes most like me". That's the Democrat rationale for nominating candidates.

Southern Baptists may not get a Southern Baptist President this time. So what? As long as the President who is elected has no plans to set up death camps for evangelicals (and I haven't seen that yet in the Romney platform, though it might be in Hillary's) it's supposed to make no difference under the American system whether he is a Mormon or a Hindu or a Zoroasterian.

>I see Mitt skipped the part of Mormon doctrine that their scriptures came from the angel Maroni and the golden salamander. “Kooky” doesn’t even begin to cover Mormon doctrine.<

And if Romney thinks Mormonism is so “kooky”, why does he stay in the Mormon church?

This is a Christian nation. The Mormon God is not the Christian God. A Christian nation should have a Christian leader, or, in all likelihood it will not remain a Christian nation. Never has it been more important to elect a truly Christian man into the Presidency as it is today.

Maybe we’re all “this” children, but the Bible is pretty clear about who are “His” children (eg: John 1:12). Seems that Christ himself referred to some guys as the children of the devil (one of those times when he was letting the Pharisees have it...)

This is NOT a Christian nation. This nation was founded with Freedom of religion built into to it from the start. Mitt has just as much right to be a Mormon as the moonies do and the happy slappys do.
