all my kids get pudgy right before a growth spurt.

Mine does the same thing. We (my son and I in the same room) got "comments" from the new pediatrician about my son's weight and I was furious over it.

He's 8 years old. If the doctor thinks his weight is a problem, then the problem is ME, and she should take it up with ME.

“all my kids get pudgy right before a growth spurt.”

Mine as well...I have worried about my oldest’s weight.
He is 4’3” and 74 lbs...
His DOCTOR however is not.

He says that his weight and height have ALWAYS been with in a few % points of each other...sometimes he is in a higher percentage in height..sometimes in weight...
But always consistent.

So...I try NOT to worry about anything other than enough activity and good food!

But I AM overweight..so..I worry!

I had a friend who was a nutritionist tell me that kids grow "out" right before they grow "up" and to look at the long term trend of height and weight before getting all upset.

My 17 year old is an athlete - a softball catcher - her thighs and calves are rock hard, even at rest. (But then, anyone who does 500 kneebends 5-6 days a weeks is going to be about the same) She wears a size 6-8 pants and top, but weighs much more than one would think because all her weight is muscle. She is a little concerned as to what will happen when she stops playing softball and I just reminded her you gotta do one of two things - eat less or replace her practices with another exercise. It's not necessarily rocket science, but I think she will always tend towards 'hippiness."

our pediatrician has always been very positive even though my kids “officially” are overweight according to the BMI charts, he has never seemed worried.
They are tall for their ages, and they are muscular.
They don’t look fat, and they get plenty of exercise.

The only time they looked heavy was right before their growth spurts. In fact, my oldest son probably spent over a year at that pudgy stage before his height too off and he slimmed out.

The doctor said everybody is different and the charts cannot possibly be accurate for everyone.

If politicians want to try and legislate this one it is going to be a real mess.
