Well, it’s kind of a rule around here.

An unwritten rule, sure. And I ping those who are deserving of courtesy. Howlin has said some awful things about conservatives and many of us on Free Republic and the only things she is deserving of right now are her recent banning and our derision.

First, an apology for my overly-critical language. I had no right to say what I did in the second paragraph.

Second, thank you for your statement of concern for my wife. It was indeed a bad accident. The car in which she was riding (in a funeral procession for her aunt) was broadsided by a large SUV. She took the brunt of the blow. Several doctors have told her she is lucky to be alive under the circumstances.

Third, I have little to add about the pain meds problem, which is indeed a terrible situation for those people prone to narcotics addiction. Contrary to popular belief, oxycodone is not addicting to all, not even to large percentages of the population, but to those who to whom it is a problem it can be devastating, as you point out.

The trick is to cut down on supplying illegal drugs while not killing off the legal supplies to those who are under a doctor's care and who desperately need it. Aspirin, Tylenol, and the such would not help my wife. Her injuries are too severe. She needs oxycodone (or something like it) during her recovery period. And I would be mad as hell if she were to be denied it.

As no dem offered his prayers for my wife's recovery, I do the same for you. It must be an inkling of hell to have intractable pain.

As you point out, the mind and body are inseparable. That said, have you looked at the popular literature for mind-body interactions for some approach that way? There must be a huge market for such literature since chronic pain is one of society's worst medical problems today.

P.S. I see where I have written something that could be misinterpreted. By saying “inkling of hell” I was not suggesting your final destination. LOL.

I agree.

The advantage of using Oxycontin is that you dont have to take it so often, and it lasts through the night. We use it mainly in those with terminal cancer, but a lot of pain docs use it for those with back pain etc.

Limbaugh got addicted from his back pain, but he managed to work on oxycontin (Scrappleface has a satire on it, saying he was the poster child for Oxycontin, proving one could take it for pain and still work without sedation...and his satire had a lot of truth in it). But LImbaugh was probably an alcoholic in the past, so was prone to addiction.(it takes much higher doses for alcoholics to get relief). And despite all the “pills” he bought, he got off them pretty quickly, suggesting his addiction was due to tolorance not addiction to get high, and his “abuse” was probably for brake thru pain.

Addicts crush it to get high, so they die of overdoses, so it gets a bad reputation.

We docs have major problems in our druggies who need pain pills...usually we limit them and use the longer acting ones so they don’t get as “high” from it, and tell them to take the doses on a schedule, not “as needed” when the pain is too bad to stand.

As for “addiction”: physical withdrawal is not the same as addiction to get high.

The rule with psychotropics is that if a pill makes you normal, it’s a medicine, if it makes you high, it’s a drug. OFten addicts can’t tell the difference, but their families can...

When I was taking Vicodin to manage my back pain in the weeks before my surgery, I hardly felt any effect from from it other than pain relief. Maybe 20 minutes after taking it I would feel a sense of peace of mind especially if I had just been in severe pain, but I felt nothing like a high. After I had surgery, I healed rather quickly, and by five days later, doses that merely took away the pain started to give me a rather strong buzz. I started cutting them in half, but by 8 days after surgery, I didn't want to bother with them any more.

How did Howlin get banned. She was the recipient of probably the most famous comment ever posted on Free Republic.

How did Howlin get banned. She was the recipient of probably the most famous comment ever posted on Free Republic.

One, she became the administrator of an anti-Freeper site where they call us things like trailer park trash and the "fetus" wing of the Republican Party. Second, she was really asking for it by making comments here like the social conservatives having their "foot on the neck of the party for too long" and other stuff like that. She was being really nasty to conservatives, especially religious conservative. Jim took the gloves off and she wasn't ready to back down on her cut-and-run from the conservative cause mindset. The inevitable occurred and she's outta here.

I’m sorry to hear that, too. I liked Howlin. Sigh.
